Mine has made it a couple times for just a couple seconds and then it stopped. I know what people are talking about, but mine just doesn't do it and I've been working it extremely hard since receiving it last Friday.

Almost all fz's make that noise. But in some they are quiet audible outside. It's not the power saving in core 2 duo. It's some wrong motherboard design.

But which motherboard? The Sony tech I talked with last Saturday says there are actually TWO different motherboards. One for the Nvidia graphic and one for the Intel. I thought that was a bit odd and so did the tech. I had called Sony Style and talked to a rep who transferred me to this tech. I wanted to know if I bought a FZ160 or ordered a FZ190 with Intel graphics, if I could latter buy an Nvidia daughter board. He checked the service manuals and was surprised to say that the Nvidia graphics were NOT on a daughterboard at all. They are on the motherboard, hence two versions of the motherboards and the reason for my poll.

Are ALL FZ's really making the noise or certain specific models?

As far as I can tell, it seems to be only specific laptops, not limited to any model, but just cropping up here and there. The majority of people seem to not have the problem. Out of all the people who have reported it, I didn't see any trend in the system they chose.

Personally, I had an FZ190 CTO 2.2 ghz, 2 gigs ram, 120 gb HD, 8400 GT. I had the 'crashing ocean waves' confused fan and the high-pitched noise. However, I've also seen other FZ190s and there is a different high-pitched noise. It's much quieter and it isn't constant. I think maybe some people get them confused, because the second one is hardly noticable but the one I had was unbearable.

I sent back my laptop today and had to re-order it (Sony's return process is BULL, by the way).

owners of HP and other brands also encountered the similar noise issue in their notebooks, and HP has mentioned the problem on the website and posted a solution on how to fix it
i went to the sony store to check out their display models, eventhough the store environment gave me a tough time, but i did heard the high pitch noise from its FZ180 displayed in the store, maybe it's environment but it seems it's a bit less noiser than mine

and if ppl dare, a poster from the HP forum suggested ppl to download the RMclock, he said it will do the trick to wipe the noise by sacrifised you battery a bit

no noise. the FZ140 at my local besetbuy doesn't have any annoying noise either but my FZ190 heats up quite a bit in a rather short amount of time. Its not too hot, but I would consider it ... hot.

so i bet some produced noise that ppl can only hear by putting their ears next to the fans, some just a bit louder and you can hear from a regular distance

also it seems by play around with the power management thing for the battery can lower the noise a bit

I have an FZ160e (second one in two weeks, bad hard disk), and although I love it, both made the same squealing noise). The tech at SonyStyle near me (they are great) said Sony is working on a patch. It's the result of the variable speed processor fad, cause unknown, but they believe it's a hardware issue, but as yet unsure.
    For software updates etc.
