I checked out the LCDs on Toshiba A135 series and Sony FE series, both 15.4 and glossy, and found them to be very close.

    Sony FE series x-brite-eco LCD
    Pro:
    the highest in brightness
    very high contrast
    Sharp
    Con:
noticeable light leakage from the bottom of the screen when color is dark
can not display faint grey lines near the bottom of the screen
( in Vista, open the document window, you would notice the vertical lines would disappear as they go toward the bottom of the screen)

Toshiba A135 series, true brite LCD
    Pro:
very bright, noticeable better than the HP dv6000, but a bit less than Sony's
    good contrast
    Sharp
can display faint grey lines/colors better than the sony's
    Con:
    ???

The Toshiba LCD can display faint colors in the lower part of the screen better than the Sony's. But the super brightness on
Sony's is a big plus for watching DVD.

    Any comment or suggestion?

    Sony's have notoriously good screens.

I have seen one older Toshiba and noticed the whites were pinkish, I don't know about the newer Toshiba's though.

I've personally loved Sony's monitors even back in the days. So I would go for Sony.

Toshiba's LCD manufacturer is LG. In my opinion They're 2nd after sony who makes decent laptops with good screen quality. I admit sony 's screen brightness is highest but it's a little bit of too much for me. (FE series)

HOwever, some other models offer good screen quality.

Toshibas have this problem of having dust in the screen right out of the box. That's what I've noticed anyway.

    Thanks for your info.

Does anyone have the experience on FE's xbrite (dual lamp) LCD?
Does it have light leakage from the bottom when the background is black?
The X-brite-eco version is very noticeable in this aspect.

I looked at the 17" Xbrite version, found it way too bright for my needs. ( but
one can always tune down the setting). It has the same problem that can't display faint color in the lower half of the screen.
On the other hand, I am very impressed by its black level, which is really and truely black. It does not have the leakage issue at all.

I am happy to find out and tell you that indeed I like the lCD on my
A130 than those on EF models displayed in stores.

One good way to check is open the "documents" window from Vista
start menu. Maximize this documnt window.
You will notice, on the right pane, there are vertical lines separating different attributes for each file, such as filename, type, size and etc.
On EF and many other machines, these vertical lines faint away as they go toward the buttom half of the LCD screen. While A135 LCD
screen can still dispay these lines in the lower half of the Documents
window. Changing the LCD brightness has no effect on this character.

So which model are you talking about? FE, or AR, X-brite or xbrite-eco?

I would certainly prefer Sony if I can see faint lines
and details in the lower half the screen, because its lcd color is more vivid than any others.

I have a dual lamp xbrite LCD on my FE.
I personally chose FE over toshiba after having seen( and analyzed) both LCDs side by side. There's no comparison. The FE screen is ahead by a mile.

Regdg light leakage...yes I do find a slight surge in brightness at the bottom of the screen when it is black. But that hardly matters.

I havent come across any line-vanishing issues on my LCD.
