Which SZ models (other than the curernt model SZ381P/X and 491P/X) have the Premium Carbon Fiber lid? For Premium Carbon fiber lid, gelcoat resin is applied to the carbon fiber casing exposing the multiple layers of carbon and providing a cool brushed look and crisscross pattern.

I'm hoping that discontinued or older models with the premium carbon casing might have better deals on them. I don't know why the premium carbon casing cost few hundreds more but it's irrestable.

The point is not only the case. I think the display is diffrent. Before a few months a had SZ220 (this is US model) and the display was XBRITE. Now i have Premuim SZ1XP/C and the display is X-Black with LED and is better.

P/C Models have premium carbon fiber in the 2XX and the 3XX series. I would be that the same applies with the 4XX series.

Thanks pwaaggs, I checked the Sony site and it seems their site is not well maintained. A lot of misinformations. However, it seems that for 4XX series, the premium carbon has N/X designation (VGN-SZ491N/X). I don't know why the sudden changes in alphabets though.

VaoUser, are you sure that the premium has the X-black and other non-premium has non-X? because the prce difference is quite high between non-premium model.

Ya, if you compare 330 vs 360, there is difference in the colour and the brightness,

On an other note, I don't think anyone on this forum have the SZ381 or SZ491 so no one really knows.

I have SZ 381. I can confirm positively that it does have premium carbon fiber. If you can control the lighting in your office, then you have a perfect screen. Black is really black. Color is really vibrant. Much better than my matte monitor. My only complain is the glare, but that's true for all glossy screen.

How much did you pay for your SZ in US dollars? What do you think about the premium carbon lid? Is it worth a money for you?

2900 dollars, free shipping no tax for CA, Pcconnection.com. Premium carbon lid is really nice. I have seen regular carbon lid in Frys and it seems to be just as thin and light, but the spec says otherwise. People say that Premium has brighter screen, but it's hard to tell the difference since I can't compare it side by side. My Frys store doesn't sell premium one.

I went to the local Sony Center and I really didn't find the premium screen brighter than the others. However, the premium lid was definately nice. So did you decide to pay that much for the premium carbon casing or else?

I bought it for reported thinner dimension, lighter weight and brighter screen and I have no regret.

    Hello guys :)
I have now SZ1XP/C Premium and is with carbon fiber body but the price is two times more then my old non premium SZ220P.
SZ1XP/C Premium - 1,69 kg, Carbon Fiber Body, X-Black LCD with LED
SZ220P - 1,8 - 1,9 kg, Magnesium Body, XBRITE Display (is NOT better the X-Black LCD with LED)

I believe all SZx4x and below (e.g. SZ110, SZ240, SZ430, etc.) are non-premium and have a non-LED backlit screen with the thicker magnesium lid, the premium SZx50-SZx80s have an LED backlit screen with the thin black carbon lid, and SZx81 and SZx91 (all models ending with a one) have the thin premium carbon lid with the defined carbon weave.

Both black carbon and premium carbon lid models have identical lcd screens and are brighter than the non-LED backlit models.

    EDIT:
The SZx90 models have a premium carbon lid as well.

Oasys if you want to buy a decent SZ premium carbon fiber I suggest you buy a SZ270P/C. I just bought one recently at www.clearanceclub.com They sell both brand new and refurbished notebooks. The brand new one cost $1599 with no tax, but you have to pay shipping. I think it is worth it for a SZ P/C because other stores still sells it for around $2200. Since technology is advancing at a rapid rate I suggest you buy an old model if you are not into gaming.

The SZ270P/C has a Black Carbon lid and not a Premium Carbon lid.

Thanks NsxMugen, but I have to agree with SPEEDwithJJ. At first I was confused too, but the P/C designation stand for normal black (non-premium) carbon casing. The premium fiber casing is the one on far left on the photos by Bogart. But I have to agreee with you about the pricing. The premium carbon casing is too expensive for what it is. But I've been smoking lately and just ordered SZ491N/X. It seems to be the only preinstalled Vista with the premium cabon lid.

my research indicates that if the first digit is a 2 or 3 then premium models will have the second digit be 6 or above. for instance sz360 or sz281 would be premiums whereas my 320 would be a regular.

also premiums have a colored palmrest (brownish) whereas regulars have it as plain aluminum (silverish)
