So, I'm curious to know what software everyone uses to watch DVD's on their laptop. Is there a clear winner here, or is there something better out there that I should know about?

    CCCP + MPC

I used to use VLC but it sucks at interlacing and has some issues with tracking in some videos, as well as issues with sloppy decodes of wmv's.

Installs MPC and Zoom Player by default.

Media Player Classic by Gabest. Plays DVD's and VOB's as is. Add Keopi's XviD, Real Alternative, QuickTime Alternative, and FFDShow for support of other formats.

I find that windvd does a fine job, especially as I find windows media players interface quite frustrating.

to me it's important that my player supports and renders through a large amount of codecs etc. Best for the job seems to me K-Lite Codec pack in conjunction with Media Player Classic or through association with MS Media Player. I think Media Player Classic requires less cpu and seems more stable. Then again MS Media player's srs wow effects are nice to have and easily tuneable.

I use Win DVD for Vaio - especially as menus on DVDs get messy on media Player.

On my old Medion I used power DVD, and I would happily continue to use it, but the version is not Vista compatible and I don't want to buy a new one.
I think there is a Nero player - but I didn't instal it (I think) as I only !! want Nero for burning CDs/DVDs shall the need arise.

Player: Mostly Media Player Classic, sometimes VLC Media Player, depending on the situation...

Codecs alt. 1: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack + QT Lite
Codecs alt. 2: Combined Community Codec Pack + Real Alternative + QT Lite

Either of these two codec combos will do the job in 99% of cases...

The reason I use CCCP is because it's an extremely comprehensive collection managed by a large group of people - it's everything I need in one package. Codecs are much like fonts, in that installing too many can cause some serious issues.

So far, it seems like the majority of you use other software to play your DVD movies. When I have some more time, I'll look into some of the software you guys mentioned, especially if it is significantly better than what came bundled with my machine.

I've only used WinDVD so far, and I was not overly impressed with it's interface. Video playback seemed fine, though. I'm looking forward to seeing what else is out there.
