    Hi Guys,
I've one SZ from the 1st series (VGN-SZ1XP here in Europe) and I wish to buy an external 22" widescreen monitor whose native resolution is 1680x1050. As you know, the graphic card on those laptops is the NVIDIA GeForce GO 7400. My question is: which resolutions will be available when plugging in an external monitor? Is 1680x1050 supported? Can you post here a link with a list of supported resolutions?
    Thanks in advance,

    Kobe

I'm positive it will be supported. Any modern video card, including just about anything from Nvidia, will support high and wide resolutions. It depends more on your monitor and what it reports it is capable of via DDI, or whether there is a Windows driver for the monitor that tells Windows what resolutions it supports. Even then, custom tuning tools like RivaTuner and PowerStrip can override Windows and make just about any resolution available that a card and monitor are physically capable of supporting.

Ok, that this kind of graphic cards support higher and wide screen resolution was clear, I just want to make sure that specific native monitor resolution (1680x1050) is supported by my graphic card, cause not all the possible resolutions are supported by a given graphic card! I don't want to run my monitor at anything other than the native resolution...

1680x1050 is a standard widescreen resolution. Yes, ANY modern graphics card is capable of it. In fact, the graphics card can generate almost ANY resolution up to its max range, while LCD's themselves are more limited in what resolutions they will accept. Some drivers may be written to allow only certain "standard" resolutions by default (and 1680x1050 will almost certainly be one of them, especially from an Nvidia card), but even when the resolution is not offered, it can be supported with custom timings through another app like PowerStrip or RivaTuner. That's all resolution is -- a specific set of modelines (timings) that determine the number of scanlines and pixels, limited only by the RAMDAC and frame buffer on the card. As long as the combination of timings and resultant number of pixels don't exceed the capabilities of the RAMDAC and frame buffer, most any oddball resolution can be forced. Even the lowliest of integrated graphics nowadays are capable of way beyond 1680x1050. You're going to be more limited by your monitor than your graphics card, trust me.
