I'm looking to get a new Sony Vaio notebook, and I am having a difficult time deciding between an FW Series, SR Series or a CS Series. I'm no computer genius, so I really appreciate your input.

Well it all depends on what you're going to be doing with it. Could you tell us?

Obviously, the FW has Centrino 2 + HD high-res screen

But the best Sony laptop is the Z :D

    Different people might think differently
I personally think the best laptop Sony has right now is the AW

I meant in the lower screen range, and yikes the AW is a 18" desktop replacing beast!!!

It will be used for a variety of things. Mainly school work and of course entertainment. I'm not really looking to spend more than $1200 give or take. I just want something that is fast, has a lot of storage and is very good overall.

The FW hands down is more powerful. If your looking for bang for your buck, for 1200, you can get bluray drive, 3650 radeon, 2.4ghz, and 3gb of ram for 1200 bucks on the FW...so pretty much the best deal ever.

The CS is a bit smaller, but not significantly lighter (it is in fact a lower end machine). If your looking for something small and light...the SR is a relatively(Within your budget) good alternative, but it will be less powerful at that price point than the FW....

Thanks. That seems to be the one that I am leaning more toward. But I do have one more question, and please forgive my lack of computer literacy, but with the blu-ray drive, will I still be able to burn CDs? Also is 3GB RAM sufficient?

Yes, even if you only have blu-ray read only drive, you can still burn CD and DVD :)

3GB RAM is more than enough to perform a daily task, don't worry about that too

You mentioned school work... and you also mentioned that the AW, as a desktop replacement, is too big for your needs.

I have the FW, and I would say the size pretty much puts the machine in the desktop replacement category. I don't find that it is very mobile at all.

I haven't been on a college campus in years so I don't know how kids are managing these days, but if I was thinking about using the laptop at the library, in class, commons, on the airplane, etc... I would stay well away from the large FW.

If you want a laptop that will stay in your room and to watch movies on, then the FW would be perfect.
