My previous two laptops have been HP AMDs (a dv5000z and a tx2500z), and I had nothing but trouble with either of them. The build quality of both of them sucked and the AMD processors can't come close to intel's offerings. I hope the same is not true for their desktops - I've actually heard good things about the Phenoms in terms of price to performance, but still no match for any of the Core i7's. I won't be going back to HP or AMD until they pick up the build quality and performance, but hey - you can never argue with their price. You get what you pay for, I've found.

As for the Sony, I'm in the market for a laptop myself, and that one seems brilliant. From everything I've read, the only knocks on it are that it has poor battery life (which frankly, is to be expected for quad core laptop) and it's somewhat loud (but I imagine the HP desktop is just the same). If you're planning on using it solely as a desktop anyway and aren't going to move it much, I don't see what you could find wrong with it...other than it's a solid $450 more than the HP desktop.

    Thanks,

Less if you do not include the monitor.

How is the GPU in the Sony compared to that HP?

    Thanks

My guess is the Phenom II 945 in the HP would eek out just ahead of the i7 720QM in the Sony. Here's notebookcheck's comparison. They don't have the Phenom II in the list, but they do have the Core 2 Extreme (Desktop) QX6700, which I would guess would bench very comparably. The C2D Extreme ranks 10, while the i7 720QM ranks 12.

    Hope that helps.

but still do you want portability or do you want a desktop? doesn't matter about video cards since a desktop card doesnt compare to a laptop video

Desktop or Laptop does not matter to me.
I do not understand if the HP 5450 video card is more powerful than the 330M in the Sony.

I want the best video card for gaming and video streaming movies.
