If your not planning to upgrade yourself then the faster harddrive in the dell would appeal to me. Also the 8400 beats the x2300 hands down (from what i've read :D)

I'll take the Dell based on those 2 choices.

I do like the Dell Desktops but I do not like the style of the laptops. Yes, the quality can be less but it depends on the model.

In your case I would choose the XPS over the CR. I have only played with the XPS for minimal time but I do like it.

The Dell will almost always have better specs for the money. Sony will almost always be built a little better and have a better screen. Both of these comments are very subjective in nature. Dell is more easily customized, IMHO. They are more open to providing you with drivers, more "open" with upgrades, etc. I have had a Sony for 3 years and then bought a Dell 1720. Was disappointed in the build quality and the display. I returned it in 4 days. Now I have - see below - and I am very happy. I could have bought a XPS 1530 and recieved more features for the money, but I just LOVE the Sony display.

Here's a funny - I traveled to Tokyo last year to visit a client. Their entire office had Dell. I pulled out my Sony laptop and we all had a laugh (particularly since I live in Austin, Tx)!
