the welcome center tells me I have a 2.4 Ghz T7700 processor, but my device manager in control panel even after looking for new hardware tells me I have a 2.2 GHz T7500 processor. Why is this? What worries me is that I might have the 2.2 when I paid and wanted the 2.4, the other thing is that even if I have the 2.4 I have the drivers intalled for the 2.2 processor and not the 2.4 as 2.4 is nowhere to be seen in the device manager

    What should I do?

Download a program called CPU-Z, and it will show you which procesor you have. Also, download another program just to reconfirm what processor you actually have. A good program to download would be NHC (Notebook Hardware Control).

Another good one is Belarc Advisor. It shows you almost EVERYTHING you need to know about your computer.

Thanks, I have confirmed with both pieces of software that I do have a 2.4 Ghz T7700, what should I do witht the drivers? As I said in the device manager I have the drivers only for the 2.2 T7500 processor

There is no difference in the driver for one speed vs another.

    Gary

P.S. this was discussed elsewhere but the reason you are seeing this is Sony uses one disk image for all configurations that differ ONLY in processor speed. There was a not that if you uninstall the processor from device manager and reboot it will find the correct one. But you might want to look this up in the threads here first. I don't remember if there were any warnings or "gotcha's" regarding this.

I noticed this as well when I received by SZ680. After wiping the drive, performing a clean install of Vista, and manually installing the drivers/software the CPU information was reported correctly.

Thanks, actually I will do a clean install myself. I just have to find the time. Steven did you saw any improvements in performance after the clean install?

where do you guys get Vista media for clean install?
I know CDW and bestbuy business sells them... but takes a while to get.

I guess I have to go a clean install as well :( seeing T7500 for my T7700
now I have to read the clean install posts again... just when I think I can escape with uninstalling/deleteing

I have an MSDN subscription and just used the media from it with the key code on the bottom of the laptop. Of course, I had to call Microsoft to activate manually.

The performance was MUCH better after doing a true clean install as opposed to the semi-clean install.
