Does anyone know if they make their own or if they contract it to another company?

Why didn't I think of that? Oh wait, I did. That was the second thing I tried right after Google didn't turn up the answer. Sony will not release the information.

I've had a look at google - I think they may manufacture them by themsleves.

Also - it wouldn't quite make sense if someone else made them.

However, that Sony does not release this information is a bit suspicious...

That's true and typical of Sony as they are usually very secretive on such information. However, most likely, their motherboards are produced by an ODM such as Quanta and so on, depending on the laptop models, etc, with the motherboards being printed/labeled "SONY" on them.

They are made by Quanta and Inventec. If you can access Sony's channel website, you'll find loads of info there.

PS. That site is not for end-users.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've often wondered this about other notebook manufacturers as well, but never took the time to research any of them. I believe its probably part of Sony's marketing to make the consumer "think" that the entire notebook is manufactured by Sony to give it a feeling of uniqueness. The same is probably true for other manufacturers. If it was made clear by manufacturer A, B, and C that all of their motherboards came from one particular place, then the consumer is more likely to buy the most affordable of the 3.

    Not right.

There different quality production lines, even with the same OEM manufactorer.

I didn't say anything about the quality being the same.

What I said was that if it was made clear that the motherboards of one manufacturer are produced in the same place as another competitor's motherboards then it would be more likely for the consumer to buy the more affordable notebook.

That is how I believe the world works. Take for instance, the sea of personal care products, like toothpaste. I suspect the lion's share of it is made in a handful of factories, which were contracted to produce different "brands" by subtly changing coloring or flavoring, or especially so, the packaging. Products are marketed as brands, so as to efficiently extract whatever the market will pay at each price point. For a high-tech product like motherboards, the "limited number of factories" might hold since the cost of such factories is a significant barrier to entry.

Feel free to call B.S. because I'm sleepy when I wrote this. Thanks for indulging me in a possibly off-topic post.
