How many people have actually done it? was it really easy? Does the keyboard part was actually easily removed?
Thanks in advance,
-
Very easy. I thought it all came apart just as the instructions stated.
-
Piece of cake. You will need AT least an hour. Don't rush it. Go through the disassembly guide once before you do it just to familiarize yourself with it.
Put in a X25-M within 30 minutes of getting mine... was up and 45 minutes later. ;-) -
It is easy and yet it is hard. You need to be extra careful when you open it. If you break some plastic, you are done.
First time I open it, it took me 45 min. But now, I can swap the hard drive under 10 minutes. -
Few tips:
Print the first pic in that post. As you remove screws, put them on the printout to remember where they go.
Getting the lid started is tricky, just be firm with it. I didn't break any of the connectors, but warped the aluminium slightly. Didn't notice until I put it back together, but it was easily bent back. -
I just replaced my HDD with the intel x25-m last night. It took me about 15 minutes to do it the first time but then realized the keyboard trim was not on flat so re did it. Took a total of 30 minutes or so. I did not bend, break or damage any part. Getting the hdd bracket out was a byotch tho.
I installed vista and windows 7 on it. Windows 7 ( 32 bit build 7000) is lightening fast. I am very impressed with this drive. -
what the average price on a x25 anyways? damn i want ssd but it so damn expensive. =()
-
X25 80GB, may be around $400 now?
By the way, It took me a good 2hrs to replace Hard Drive.
At the beginning it was so hard to open only at one point I realized there was still one screw which I forgot to pull out. Duh!
I almost destroyed the keyboard forcing it open. Luckily
everything is fine now. -
Great deal. -
The X-25's are the best drives out there IMO. Be sure you install the newest firmware.

I couldn't live with 80GB of storage, so the Intel is now in another lappy. I purchased a Patriot v3 256GB for the Sony. -
sell me it lol. wow 300 + price range still.. i guess i still have to wait until samsung start mass producing it lol.

anyone know what the height in mm the SATA drive in the Vaio Z is? I'm looking at upgrading from the 320GB to a 750GB but the only ones for sale right now are pretty thick (13mm). Not sure if they'd fit. Best, MSC.
-
It (13mm) doesn't fit - you need 9.5mm drive.
-
the 13mm will NOT fit. The bracket that holds that HDD to the case won't be able to screw down.
Unless you make your own custom bracket, its not going to work.
Who has replaced the HDD in Sony Z series?
