I have a S-580 if I watch a video stream (for instance from cnet.com) it plays fragmented running on battery while it streams perfectly when the notebook is running through external power. The same happens when I check the mail using MS Outlook, it takes a lot more time downloading a message in battery mode. Nornal browsing isn't affected that much.
I have a 2Ghz CPU and I installed Notebook Hardware Control (power scheme: max battery) while the active power scheme is Vaio Maximum Battery.

The other strange thing is that NHC doesn’t allow me to set the “Enable notebook hardware control service (recommended)” under the NHC settings.

    Your experience is greatly appreciated

AFAIK, the power consumption of the wireless card depends on your power policy.

If you look at the options under Control Panel\System\Hardware\Device Manager\Network Adapters\Intel Pro(Wireless) properties you'll see that the default settings leave the power usage to power management.

However you can override those settings and use them at maximum power.

Thanks avicenne13!!! I solved my problem tweaking the wireless card power management settings!

I still don't understand why NHC doesn’t allow me to set the “Enable notebook hardware control service (recommended)” option under NHC settings. But that's merely a curiosity because everything is running smoothly now!

    Merry XMAS everybody!

You have to pay for NHC and recieve a registration code before you can enable it as a service...
