I have an AR series Vaio which is an AR51SU, the fan a lot of the time is working like a trooper even when no applications are running. No scheduled scans are running, no real time defrag etc... Its basically just the desktop yet the fan is working quite hard at times, not all the time but a lot of the time.

    Any ideas ?

Check Vaio control center, you can probably choose a quiet profile.

The cause can be Vista services like Superfetch or indexing. You may want to try if disabling them helps.

Also a clean install can help, by eliminating unnecessary processes.

Or, if your system used to be more quiet, there might be dust in your system.

The "balanced" mode is temperature based. The temperature in the system doesn't immediately drop when you stop a program -- it takes time, so the fans won't immediately spin down.
Also, having stopped your programs doesn't mean that the machine is idle -- many housekeeping tasks can cause the hard drive to work, which generates heat.

Make sure you haven't covered up air exhausts or intakes, even partially.

If you want the laptop to become quiet as fast as possible after having run something that caused the fans to spin up is to increase the fan speed. Set it to "performance" mode for a minute or two, and it will cool faster, after which you can switch it back to "balanced", and it should be fairly quiet.

Thanks, mine is set on high performance at the min, i have tried the others and its still the same to be honest. Its mains powered all the time and i never use the battery.

Are the fans on a Vaio not supposed to switch off at some point and then only come on when required as thats how my old Toshiba laptop works, the fans on my Vaio are on all the time, occasionally the fans go into a slow idle but always remain on.

I'm not sure if the fans on the AR are ever to switch off completely. On the Z they aren't.

Ok so switching to the silent profile doesn't help you say. That leaves 3 possibilities: Vista services, unnecessary processes and dust.

    Please answer the following questions:
-How many processes do you have running at the moment?
-Has you system always been this noisy or not?

If those don't work you may have been unlucky with the CPU you got. Some CPUs get hotter than others, causing the fans to work harder.

Its kinda dumb but... maybe there's a spyware that got into your PC, making your PC work harder to send out those spams? Very typical condition when the CPU fan works like a tropper out of no where.
