Why does the FZ seem too good to be true?

Unless I am reading it drastically wrong, the Sony Vaio FZ (Model VGN-FZ290EBB) is priced at $999 (Original 1,219 but you save $220) and with a lack of a "Customize" button it appears that the specs are:

    Intel C2D T7250 2.0 GHz 2Mb Cache 800MHz FSB
    2GB DDR2-667MHz RAM
    NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GT GPU 256mb
    160Gb 5200rpm HDD
    XBRITE-HiColor
    15.4" @ 5.9lbs
Along with other goodies like HDMI, a/g/b/n wireless, bluetooth

Now obviously these specs are not crysis worthy or anything but surely they do seem like they would cost over $999. Unless i am just so used to looking at "thin and light" laptops that my perception of cost :performance ratio is skewed. Regardless, seems like a deal to me!
Which looks better....the black/silver or the white :p

15.4" is definitely the price/performance sweet spot. You can get a lot of computer for under $1000 these days. Even from Sony! Hehe

that's not too bad a deal, especially for a sony. black/silver. the catch must the 200 rpm missing from the hdd though so be wary. :D

The FZ series will very very soon be replaced by the FW series, so these nice prices must be to move out the rest of the FZ stock. :)

Not too good to be true. I picked up an SZ680NWC for $999.99 a little over a month ago. T7250, 2GB, 80GB (upgraded it to 250GB), 8400GT and all the other usual stuff. The SS Outlet I went to also had an SZ640NSA for $739.99.

This FZ model is actually the older release, not the FZ4 ones. It was in the Sony outlet for a while (clearance) and I guess it got moved to FZ's main page. Good deal though.

One catch, these models don't ship with Vista SP1.

Given the imediate availability of SP1 as a download, I would hardly consider this a "catch".

And if you don't get SP1 through Windows Update, then it would be a waste of time doing research on "how to get SP1".

Not sure I follow yor logic. Such a search will lead one to info on the drivers they need to update so that it DOES show up in Windows update. Am I missing something in what you are saying???
