Hi guys/gals,
I'm the proud new owner of a Sony Vaio SR29XN/S (european model, if that matters, running vista english). I found the standard-installed programs generally helpful, and I removed only McAfee. Because my MS Office cd's are not with me right now (to install fresh or enter the serial number I have from that version), I decided to keep the 60 day trial of Office 2007 for now. I installed a new firewall and antivirus, and some other small programs.
My questions:
1. When I run Windows Update, it wants to install the Office _2003_ SP3 package. Why would it want to do that...? Is this SP3 package also needed for correct functioning of Office 2007? Why would it need anything for the 2003 version??
2. I ran "sfc /scannow" just to see the results. You'd think, with a fresh install and some extra programs added, you wouldn't get any errors. However, my "Windows Sidebar" has some errors in the .ini file, which it cannot repair. The sidebar seems to work fine... But okya, I deleted the sidebar.ini file and ran the program again, so that it "reinstalls" (=puts settings back to default). The sidebar again seems to work fine, but "sfc /scannow" reports the same errors again. Has anyone experienced this, and what to do?
Thank you for your answers, best regards,
A

I believe this is because the Office 2007 OEM preinstall components include some of the Office 2003 components - so WUpdate detects that and says you have to install the 2003 SP.
If you remove the preinstalled Office and reinstall from discs, you will likely not be prompted again. I only buy MLK's for my Vaio's now so have seen this often.
Why does windows update want office 2003 sp3?
