Why is there no WWAN for Japanese SZ notebook? Why don't they just leave a generic WWAN hardware and let the customer insert their own simcard from the provider they choose to have? Is there a technical problem for that?

Since Japan does not use the same wireless network we use here in the US, it doesn't make sense for them to have such module in the system. Instead, I think they have the OneSeg TV tuner (digtal tv tuner) in place of the modem, which is more useful for the Japanese market.

+1 to what outie says - Sony caters to individual markets to some degree. WWAN is popular here, but not in Japan. Such is life.
I'm in the process of getting a PCMCIA wifi card for Sprint's EVDO network for my SZ90, so it doesn't really matter. -
Plus you can use the card in any other laptop you come across provided you have the software with you. Plus Cingular WWAN should not even be offered for the big monthly bill they require; Sprint EVDO module would have been much faster with a lower monthly bill.
Why no WWAN for Japanese SZ notebook?
