Sounds like it might be faulty, does Windows detect it properly?

I think Vista is a bit dodgy with regard to DVDs.

On my mothers Vista laptop a DVD wouldn't play or would play poorly, but on my old XP laptop it works fine...

Then Nero caused problems with Win DVD, however that worker (Nero went...)

So its quite possible hat your software is causing these problems.

It may be an idea, to, if you can, reinstall any software connected to DVD movies.

Also, have you tried different DVDs? Or is it one that's treid and tested? Sometimes DVDs are faulty, rare but possible.

( I am assuming you are speaking about movie DVDs and not data DVDs)

You might try looking at this link:

Many folks have had similar problems and this usually fixes the issue.

Does the DVD drive work under Ubuntu? Pop in one of Ubuntu's CDs, run a Live desktop and see if it works. If it does the problem is with Vista. If it doesn't it may be the drive itself.

I was trying Ubuntu Live CD yesterday to check a similar problem and found one obstacle: Because it is running off the CD, Ubuntu won't release the optical drive.

Go into Device Manager and look at the properties of the optical drive. Does the current region match the region on you DVD?

Can you see the contents of the DVD in Explorer? There should be two folders - Audio_TS and Video_TS. If you can see the contents then go into the Video folder and right click on one of the VOB files. There should be an Open with option, with the DVD player software as the default program. Is something there?

It is also possible that the settings have been changed so that the drive does not AutoPlay. There should be an Open AutoPlay option on the drive properties in Explorer. Is the DVD player software set to autoplay?

O.K.,I looked at the settings, the box is ticked to autoplay, the Mat****a DVD-RamVj.850s ATA Device says it is working properly, but still it looks like windows is not recognizing that there is anything in the DVD drive. When I select Windows media player,I get a message saying that the Media player cannot connect, also when I swith to Windows media center and select play DVD video,I get a message to insert a DVD video in the drive once again, when there is already one in there. There are also no flags on the DVD drive when I look at it in Device manager.

Open the drive tray and check that the optics are not covered with dust. If so, carefully clean them.

Put in any CD / DVD and see if you can see any file or folders listed in Explorer. If Explorer says there is no disc or doesn't list any files then it appears that the drive is not reading properly.

Do you have an operating system installation / recovery disc that should have come with the computer (or should have been made from the image file on the hard disk)? Try booting from that (or the Linux Live CD previously mentioned). If the computer won't recognise a disk in the optical drive at the BIOS boot stage then the problem has to be hardware and replacement is probably needed.
