From time to time, only a blink of a second though, I'd get the lines seen on the print screen below on this Sony VGN-Z890. Moving the mouse will make them disappear. If I remember correctly this happens in both Stamina/Speed mode.

Mobile Intel 4 series driver: 8.15.11.8684
    nvidia: 186.84 (directX 11)
    Bios: INSYDE R5030M3 (18.08.2009)

is this a hardware defect or driver problem, anyone?

It just looks like the windows side bar separator. When you run your mouse over it it briefly appears then disappears.. Or you have your mouse pointer on the bottom right corner activating the AERO "hide" feature.

There is no Windows Sidebar in Windows 7. It was removed, allowing the gadgets to sit directly on the desktop.
Actually, since the posted screenshot shows a Preview Window, I would venture a guess you are seeing the Aero Preview feature. It is very similar to Aero Peek; hover over any Preview Window which pops up on the Super Bar and all other windows are fade out, via Aero Peek. BTW you can also activate Aero Peek by hitting the Windows Key + Space Bar, if you don't want to move your mouse to the lower right corner of the Super Bar.

I think he's talking about the much broader diagonal lines all over the screen.

Unfortunately this is a hardware issue with the Z series, which occurs from time to time. Others will be able to tell you more.

update: I'm talking about those wide lines you see, that come from the top left down to the bottom right of the screen.
Actually it only happens when I have some window open, e.g. Computer or IE and when another window is open, e.g. Calculator and then by minimizing this to the taskbar and hovering the mouse over the aero peek, IE will minimize and then those diagonal lines would be present (note the calculator window does not suffer from those lines, just the background).

this should give a better idea (the lines are approx. 1 - 2 cm in width):

red arrows just show you different examples where it is obvious

I didn't realize there was a known hardware issue regarding this problem with the Z series. That seems unfortunate, especially for such a high end laptop.

Update: see my response in the next post below.

To me, the broad diagonal lines he posted look exactly like the glass "reflections" present in Aero, as seen above.

Those lines are by design. It is part of the eye candy when you use Aero Peek to preview other windows or view your desktop underneath open windows.

There is nothing wrong with your hardware or drivers. The behavior you describe is by design.

There unfortunately is a hardware issue regarding diagonal lines across the screen, just different ones I guess.

It's something to do with (light) vibrations causing diagonal lines. Again, for more info, ask others or do a search, since I haven't seen them myself. I just know it's a known issue which people have been, and still are, complaining about.

I hadn't seen the peak hover effect either, hence I mixed them up without the full explaination. Sorry for causing confusion.
