    Hi

I am considering upgrading my Vaio FW-VGN490 Laptop to a faster Hard drive. The Vaio came equipped with a 5400RPM 330 GB drive.

Is it safe to consider a 7200 RPM drive, or do I run into the possibility of overheating problems.\?

    I am considering the following:

    1) Seagate Momentus XT STBD750100 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s Solid State Hybrid Drive.

or 2) Seagate Solid State Hybrid ST1000LM014 1TB 64MB Cache 2.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s Laptop Hard Drive. This drive is 5400RPM.

Not sure where you are located but option 1 is 160 bucks plus tax here, and option 2 is 129 plus tax, if you can afford more and willing to loss hdd space, I would opt for a full SSD and if need be remove the optical disk drive and add a hdd with larger capacity there if you are bold enough. But if you can do with 128 GB, I'd grab a ssd which should be around the same price.

an ssd is not in the cards. I would need a capacity of approx 300gb, and its beyond my budget.

A 7200 rpm drive just spins faster, there is no risk of overheating. The best option is a SSD, the next best option is a Hybrid drive.
the 5400 drive *should* give you slightly better battery life. I looked up both those drives and the 2nd one looks like it's a newer version of the first drive?
Either of those drives should work great, and give you a considerable performance boost.

Thanks.. I chose the 750gb 7200rpm version. I don't use my laptop with battery that frequently.
