    Hello everyone,
after researching for some time, I've almost decided to replace my outdated dell d610 with the highest Sony SR model. I'm a scientist and I mostly do word processing, reading articles but also a lot of photoshop stuff and a bit of modelling. A lot of multitasking. I would like to have a notebook that gives a good/powerful performance for next 4 years. Do u think SR is able to do so?

    Thanks a lot,
    Jonts

3 years with a strong CPU, 3-4GB and the ATI 3470 should be do-able. 4 years is pushing it.

    I don't think you'll be satisfied after 3 years.

But actually too much depends on how heavy your use of photoshop, modelling and multitasking is. If you are a heavy user the SR might already feel slow in two years. Not that the SR is a slow laptop, not at al.

Well, when you buy your computer, you hopefully will spec it such that it will meet all your computing needs. If it is giving you a decent speed in all your tasks, then ya, it will last you 4-5 years no problem, as long as it doesn't break down to a point where it cannot be economically fixed.

However, it will last you 4-5 years based on the fact that you will not be installing any latest/greatest software with high computing requirements in the years down the road. As long as you spec your laptop to satisfy the latest/greatest software of today, and your plans are to stick with those set of software (or ones with less computing requirements), then I'd say it will easily last you 4-5 years.

I used my Dell Desktop for 6 years (I paid $2400 for a well spec'ed out rig) and it ran pretty well for all my needs. With a laptop, its bit different because its lot more portable, so it will experience higher wear and tear. But as long as your hardware holds out, I see no problem.

    Thanks everyone for replying.
I guess I would take the SR with the highest specs available on Sonystyle Germany. Currently I think it should be more than enough for my needs...
In general I'm very careful with my things and I'm not so much worried about the physical tear and wear. This Dell of mine looks like just out of shop (although I carried it around a lot).
I think I'll pull the trigger soon.
Pity they only come as silver in here... I would like a black one.
