Since Merom is going to come out soon, do you guys think Sony will start selling SZs with Merom and discontinue the Yonah SZs or just start a new line of laptops with the merom chip?

I am pretty sure that Sony, like every company, releases a new Laptop-Series.
They would be stupid if not.

You can upgrade your SZ160 if you're comfortable doing it. Actually from what I've read it's not supposed to be very difficult.

It depends on if Sony release a Bios update for the notebook. If they don't then i'll be hard to upgrade.

right. I heard it fits and its easy to do so, but sony need to release the bios update or this chip WILL suck. Someone in another post tried it. it works but runs at full speed only. it wont slow down so battery drain is unreal. I have a feeling Sony is gonna want us to buy a new notebook and not upgrade.

I agree. I don't think that Sony will release a Bios update, because its costs money to develop, and they don't want to do it. And futhermore, it'll be a headache to Sony to upgrade warranty on such laptops.

It'll put Sony right off, and they'll, predictibly, say go and buy another laptop, with Merom already ionstalled. I fear the same with other manufacturers.

youre quote is going back to this same ppost.
and if you mean it''ll support it, yes, it will fit, but alot of features dont work like it being stuck at full speed(no cpu throttling) and a few other things. If I'm wrong, please correct me

I'm hoping that Sony will decide to refresh their 14.1 model with a Merom, how likely is that ?

Its very hard to say at the moment. Sony has two directions it can take. It can replace motherboards in existing laptops, with a Merom supported one, or it can design a new laptop that takes into consideration all the Merom requirements. It will probably be cheaper to simply put a Merom into an existing board, and upgrade the Bios.

Does anyone have any hard knowledge of when Sony will replace the Yonah by Merom in teh SZ, versus redesign the motherboard?

Many people are very concerned about whether Sony would replace Yonah by Merom in SZ model. But I dont think Sony will do this because they want to diversify its product range. We hope that the next Vaio models equipped with Merom look even better than SZ.
Perhaps we should ask the VAIO SZ Developers. Here we go!
