I Googled the chip name and found this...

Yeah, I've seen such statements before as well, but I'm wondering how significant the reduction in power consumption will be. I mean, if in real life terms it means 30 minutes to 1 hour of extra battery life, well I wouldn't consider that hugely significant and I'll purchase now. If, on the other hand, it's an extra 2 hours or more, well maybe that's something worth waiting for.
I suppose less power consumption will also mean less heat, but I haven't heard any complaints of heat in the Vaio Z for the P8000 series chips.... -
The question is, how is Sony going to squeeze in a Core i7 into such a thin frame, and keep it light as well as maintaining battery life?
Also, how soon do Sony Vaios actually come out after new models are announced? -
Lots of interesting comments in here but I think people are being a tad optimistic regarding release dates.
Laptops like video game consoles take a lot of money to develop. The research, design, testing all takes a great deal of time also. So when you combine this cost & time outlay you have to realise that they're out to make a PROFIT. And in order to pay off the laptop they need to sell a significant amount of units, and then from there they can continue selling it until really they feel they can without having to redesign, as this is the optimal situation for them....
The sony vaio z only came out in I think it was August September? last year.
So in reality it's only about a year old and in my opinion it will be Midyear or 3rd Quarter 2010 before we see a completely new Z series out.
As many have said, there is literally no competition out there for the vaio Z..
which weighs 1.5KG
has an optical (or bluray drive)
2 usb ports
vga
hdmi
switchable graphics
massive battery life
all in a compact 13" form factor
So realistically there isn't much pressure, or business sense, on sony right now to rush out a new Z in the next few months... -

Nope, as soon as Arrandale debuts in January, look for a new Z or the Z's replacement days or weeks later. Why would Sony wait so long, by then Intel will be readying the release of Sandy Bridge 32nm Huron River platform (due in Q4 2010 or Q1 2011).
Easily since the Core i7 in the new Z will use a 15W or 25W 32nm Arrandale Core i7 L or LM series processor. -
So many conflicting opinions... it's hard to decide what to do. I can buy one today, but I can also wait until January if they're going to make a successor.
GRRR!!!! -
Welcome to the life of technology.
It's very frustrating. I guess we just have to be content with whatever we can buy TODAY. -
you're on. remember my username. see you in january
-
Well it definitely wont be an i7. That makes absolutely no sense. Look around....alll the new i7 laptops are 15 inch and up and all of them that are close to be considered thin are toaster ovens. An i7 in this chasis will melt lol. I could see maybe a low voltage processor in a Z but I dont think that makes much sense as the main selling point of th eZ is its power in a small package.
-
well obviously they wouldn't put in a 4-core super high clocked i7 in there, that's why arrandale is the "mobile" version

18w and that's with IGP, IMC, & IOH
looks like an awesome chip to put in a z-like laptop
-
maybe, but i think it would make the Z lose power as it maxes out at 2.26 with 4mb of ram. You can get a faster chip in the Z now. What will u gain 20 minutes of battery life? 4-cores doesnt make any sense to me personally. Especially in a 13 inch machine. Its advantages are gaming and encoding. Two things that should be on the bottom of the list for 13.1 inch laptop buyers. If i lose 20 minutes of battery life in exchange for a smaller cache and slower clock speed i will go with the dual core chip. Plus early reviews on this turbo mode thing is looking more like BBQ mode.

to those considering it, don't bother waiting for a new generation Z.
just get a current generation z, buy an intel X25 SSD drive and replace the standard drive. Windows 7 bootup in about 10 seconds. What more you want? -
i think that's what i'm going to do fatjoez. it's either i buy in december when i'm visiting the states, or have to wait until august when i'm next in the u.s. for a visit. i can't stand my current hp piece of crap with 10 minute battery life...
speaking of which, i'm considering ordering from Portableone and having them install a OCZ Vertex Turbo 120gb. How does this compare to the stock 128gb ssd that sony uses? -
I love my current Z laptop but would welcome a newer model - maybe a tad thinner/lighter, with better battery life with a faster new CPU from intel.
I put in a momentus 7200 RPM, 500GB drive which really sped it up and was only $100 more and when a fast cheap SSD 500GB option comes along I'll probably upgrade it again.
I'll agree with others here that a built in optical is a must. While I don't use it everyday I'd still have to lug around an external every day which is just rediculous.
I think they probably need 2 lines similar to the Z - one without an optical like the X with a faster processor and one like the current Z only significantly updated.
OH - one more thing - I'd like them to make a slightly smaller AC power supply as well. I've tried the standard and the travel - both are just a teeny bit too big for the bag I like so much. The standard fits - the travel won't at all. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
The new Z would not use that. That is the low power for laptops like Acer's Timeline Series and Asus's UL Series. The Z will use the 25W and 35W Core i5/Core i7's that are more powerful. -
Hopefully we'll get some info in the next couple of months. I know a few people holding out for the next z series.
-
But technology always brings breakpoints. The value of an electronic device is constantly reducing every day. If we don't buy right after the breakpoints we cannot gain most out of the money we spent. That's why we have guides like http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

do you know of a similar site like that for sony vaio?
-
How did you get 10 sec. boot? Is that from I/O button to fully functional OS? If so what are your specs and settings?
I'm only getting ~30-33sec. from I/O button to fully functional OS
-
What a wonderful site! Same here, I would love to know if there is a site like that for Sony Vaios.
-
I'd love to put in an SSD as soon as SSDs don't have the frequent issue of losing your data (which the last ssd firmware update caused). When they have a reliable SSD which hold 500GB or more and costs about $140 (the current price of a seagate momentus 7200RPM, I'm completely ready. I'm sure in a few years every drive I buy will be SSD but right now they aren't yet stable enough and they are too dang expensive but I have a LOT of hope for them.
Will there be a new Sony Z soon?
