Has anyone managed to install XP 64-bit version with FW notebook and get basic functionality to work? I don't really mind if FN keys, S1 key, AV Mode key and VAIO Power Management don't work since they don't work with the 32-bit version either but everything else has to work.

How is the speed of the FW under 64bit XP? Is it all noticeably faster than 32bit XP? How about boot times and general application start-ups etc? I've been dreaming for a while in updating my laptop to 64bit XP specially now that many of the drivers are available and are mainstream. I think 64bit XP will be the ultimate 64bit OS, much better than Vista or even Windows 7 64bit :)

Could you provide a step-by-step description of the installation of 64bit XP on the FW? What specific drivers didU use and where U download them from? And which drivers did you for the Hardware Function keys?

Thanks very much for the info!!! :)

32bitXP is faster than 32bit Vista/7. 64bitXP is faster than 64bit Vista/7. I dont care about fnacy desktop effects, re-designed taskbars and all the other crap that is useless and bloatware. I care about the leanest and lightest OS to run my applications. Should me one instance where Vista or 7 is any faster and lighter than XP and Ill burry XP myself before its exctinct. Otherwise Ill use till im the last one to do so, because Vista is a joke and 7 is the same, just cutter slightly less "slow-motion" than Vista. I only care about speed and for that XP is the best and will be the best OS Microsoft ever made. Its all downhill from Vista and 7 is Vista SP2, no more no less, despite the marketing hype and millions of people drolling over it brainwashed. Now you can bash me at will... its all good :)

I highly recommend Windows 98 SE, which will satisfy your needs.
Moreover driver support for 64-bit XP is abysmal compared to Vista/ Win 7. Nobody would want to go back in technology, atleast with computers. Why would want a leaner OS if you have a behemoth hardware to run? To gather dust in your unused portion of hardware?

Dont be ridiculoys. Comparing Win98 SE to XP worries me that you dont know anythng about OSes. I need the leanest 32bit Operating System to run my 32bit applications (99.9% of all software out there today is still 32bit), and that is XP. Period.

Earth to Forum, Earth to Forum: The majority of the business world in the States runs on Windows XP. In fact, even in Europe several models of the FW offered XP as the OS. Why do you think Win 7 is offering 32-bit? To attract many of the XPers to Win 7.

It may not make sense to those of us for whom the bells and whistles of new OS's are half the attraction, but any business computer today MUST offer the possibility of running XP (cf. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNZ790 for evidence that the latest Z model offers the XP downgrade and drivers -- because XP is necessary in the business world!).

to be honest. windows 7 is the best os. whether it be 32/64. it was way faster than vista ever was. uses like 600 megs of ram on a 32 bit os and quite a bit more on 64 bit. it boots fast and has allot of features vista should have had to make ones life easier. although not all games run smooth with this os just yet. like when your gaming online. you will get the famous boot for unknown api error by punkbuster. plus it's a bit more user friendly. it's just as fast if not faster than xp was, with way more better features. xp is about to get the boot once windows 7 hits. because now people dont have to sacrifice speed for a bunch of fancy stuff most people don't use.(which you can added back all in good time)

and xp 32 bit is not faster than 32bit windows 7...

Whatever you say is true sir. Microsoft should have consulted you before re-writing a OS.
