    Hello,

I just received the Windows Xp Downgrade Discs from Sony. This is for my SZ650. I am able to boot from Disc one. It runs through the first half of installation. Then, as soon as it says "Insert Recovery Disc 2 then click OK", I place disc 2 in the dvd-rom drive. However, it won't read the disc. It keeps asking me to insert in Disc 2, when it is already in the drive.

Is it possible Sony sent me a defective Disc 2? I tried inserting Disc 2 into a different computer, and it reads it just fine (via windows explorer).

I’m going to try to make a copy of Disc 2 into a blank DVD. Then use the new copied DVD during the installation. I hope that will work.

Any idea why the installation won’t read Disc 2?

Thanks and have a great day,

    esoin

That's strange, a single downgrade XP DVD was supplied with my SZ7. There is no second disc here.

I went to sony's websites, entered a live support chat, and the rep told me to reset my bios to defaults. Although I haven't messed with the bios since I got the computer, I'm going to try it when I get home. Wish me luck!

I had a bad set of XP downgrade discs for my TZ as well. Could not read disc 1. I made a copy of the disc and it did work, although I contacted Sony and had them send out a replacement set. Good luck!

Making a copy of disc 2 solved the problem.

    Thank you

Does anyone know how to do a clean install with these discs? I don't want all the bloatware.

I don't believe it's possible. They're essentially a disc image that have been slipstreamed with the default drivers and software. Aside from (re)purchasing a retail copy of XP the easiest solution is to borrow/download a retail XP disc image, burn & install that, then change the product key to the one that is stuck on the bottom of your notebook.
