Has anyone attempted/succedeed installing Windows XP in a VPC SA390X? Is there any link for the drivers?
    Thanks!

PS: Please don't waste time telling me XP is too old, I'm interested in having it as a second OS anyway.

Why not just run XP as a VM? Then you can just load it up whenever you need to use it.

Good point to search in the UK Sony site, but I'm interested in the full set of drivers for the VPC SA390X, not just the SATA. These drivers are probably undocumented, but usually someone that go thru the painly process end up posting them somewhere.

Because I want to unleash the full power of XP, including the lesser battery consumption. In my previous VAIO, which came with Vista, the battery endured double when I used it on XP. I assume 7 is no different than Vista in this respect.

I've managed to cleanly install XP on a VPC-SA390X (hardware probably equal or very similar to any SA model). I did so by using some of the drivers in the links above, but I had to search elswere for others not provided by Sony, plus overcome a couple of failed attempts. Now I have the experience and the full set of drivers. If I find some time I'll upload them somewhere along with detailed instructions, but in the meantime if anyone needs me to point to the drivers or whatever help related to installing XP as a second OS to this machine, just ask and I'll be glad to help.

Vista was a complete hog but 7 runs significantly lighter than it. Not actually compared it to XP for battery life, as the only machine I have installed both those OS on had 75% wear and wouldn't last long enough to get to logon!

I'd be interested to see the comparison once you get up and running - XP doesn't multithread as well as 7 so I'd expect it to burn more juice on longer run times for heavy processing, but the background footprint would be smaller than 7. I would suggest comparing the drain after an hour of idle each, then charge it up and the drain after an hour of something draining (pick your benchmark of choice!).

Well I didn't perform such scientifically thorough comparisson, but I rarely multitask when I'm on the go (on battery), just wifi, office... work stuff in general. I don't have background processes other than many Firefox tabs loaded. In such use, I already compared and XP just runs longer. My laptop already lacks the 7 hs advertised by Sony, but with XP I can claim almost 5, while 7 is lucky to reach 3½ in sunny days...

Now I'm intrigued... what kind of builds did you do for the two OS? I might do a clean, light install of each on the same machine, fully patched with no extra software added and see what the battery life is like for them at idle and under some battery-eater benchmark.

XP-PROx32sp3 sharpened by nLite vs Sony's 7-HPx64sp1 --all bloatware uninstalled and no antivirus.

Even if the difference is so wide that I doubt 7 will come out winner, it would certainly be interesting to have solid numbers on the issue.
