I've read countless threads and posts about how to solve this issue. I can't seem to change the brightness level in Speed Mode, be it through Fn keys or Power Option on the laptop. I've tried disabling UAC and running VESMgr.exe and VESMgrSub.exe as administrators. And still can't alter the brightness level. Everything else works, just the brightness option won't work in Speed Mode. Stamina Mode works flawlessly, giving me the option the change the brightness level how I want.
Am I missing something here? I see many others having this problem? How do I actually fix this? Anyone want to give me a step-by-step guide on how to get this fixed? Anyone?

anyone have any suggestions?
-
Did you try running those .exe's in compatibility mode?
-
It's the only problem I encountered as well on the Z ... it works in Stamina. So it may be a driver incompatibility.
-
I don't believe anyone has been able to work around this one...
@ jim_0068: I did try...in fact, installed all drivers in Vista compatibility mode. Even have the two .exe's in Event Service running in adminstrative mode. Fn+ brightness still doesn't work with the Nvidia card. -
It also doesn't work when you change brightness in the power settings either, so it's not just a Fn + brightness issue; there's some fundamental incompatibility.
-
I've also faced the same problem. Even Nvidia driver update doesn't solve the problem. Any other ideas?

I have the same problem and I'm on 7 RC1

me 2 same problem .

I have just installed Windows 7 Ultimate version 6.1.7600 build 7600, and same problem still exists. VAIO Z model is Z92JS.
Speed mode:
Key Fn+Brightness = not working, the Sony adjustment icons pops up, and you can go one step up/down, but there is no change on LCD brightness.
Software power settings, brightness = not working. Can slide up/down, but no effect on LCD brightness.
Stamina mode:
Key Fn+Brightness = OK!
Software power settings=OK
Also just noticed that if I run in Stamina mode, and have attached a external VGA monitor (analog), then behaviour of brightness Fn-buttons are similar to when running Speed-mode.
Any other experiences? Or solutions? -
Not only that, but the power saving option for dimming the display automatically after a period of inactivity does not work as well. This is currently a known issue for all Z's on Win 7 and there is no known solution to this problem yet. Only thing we can do is wait until sony releases an official vaio Z graphics driver for Win 7.

I understand that the brightness cannot be adjusted on Speed setting, but has anyone noticed that when you put the computer to sleep and wake it back up when its set to Speed, that the display is a bit dimmer? When this happens I have to put it back on Stamina, sleep, come out of sleep and set it back to Speed again for it come back to full brightness.

Must be the Windows 7 Beta 7000 build, because I am running Windows 7 RTM, and I don't have that problem.
The only problem I am having is brightness adjustment in speed mode. -

i dont understand how Sony's drivers links the various other drivers (including graphics driver), so I do them all. But definitely graphics driver, battery checker, and power management.
Here's the order somebody posted in the windows 7 forum. I've modified it slightly, as it works better for me this way:
Chipset Driver
Audio Driver
Bluetooth
Memory Stick
SD Card
Fingerprint Dr
Webcam
Conexant Modem
Firmware Parser
IO Driver
Mouse
Real Tek HD Driver
NVidia
Shared Library
ISB Utility
Event Service
Control Center
Power Utility
Setting Utility
Smart Wi
Protector Suite
For your case, I'd install the following as minimum:
Chipset Driver
Firmware Parser
IO Driver
NVidia
Shared Library
ISB (Battery) Utility
Event Service
Control Center
Power Utility
Setting Utility
I think Firestone has reposted the drivers
Check Post # 334 in the "Vista Business 64 Bit Drivers for Vaio Z" thread. -
found the problem, but I don't know how to permanently fix it. Its not the screen brightness that decreases, its the "desktop" brightness thats in NVIDIAS control panel (those sliders for brightness contrast....). I was wondering why the mouse point was super bright, but the other things were dim. Anyway, its set to 50%, but when the screen dims by itself, I have to go into NVIDIA's control panel, takes the slider away from 50, bring it back to 50 and then its fixed. No need to sleep. this get stranger and stranger as we go along.

Why chipset driver?
Microsoft is fully aware of INTEL chipsets
in Windows 7. Please explain?
Also, does anyone know what Firmware Parser, Programmable
IO Driver, Sony Shared Library, etc. actually do? Some of this has
to be not needed?
