No luck. It installs, but does not work.

I dont need it anyway, the biggest problems are nvidia drivers for my speed mode and not working brightness buttons

    How about this: http://www.vaio-link.com/os/vista/64bit/

I was going to try to get all drivers from this.

I have only just come across this thread - I have a SZ61WN, which I understand is similar to the SZ650. I have installed Windows 7 64 bit on the VAIO by following the usual thread for Vista clean install to make sure I followed the order of the installation - and using the drivers at http://www.vaio-link.com/os/vista/64bit/.

I let windows do an automatic update to find the correct NVDIA graphics driver as the one downloaded from the NVIDIA sit for x64 and Windows 7 did not install. Stamina settings seemed to work OK when you do a "Let windows search for best driver".

The fingerprint sensor works with the Lenovo version 5.6 fingerprint driver (p961c_fprx64_56ww.exe) for Thinkpads (I found this out as I have installed Win Server R2 - which is built on the windows 7 x64 kernel - on a Thinkpad T61). The fingerprint application for windows 7 x64 that I downloaded from the UPEK site did not recognise the sensor. You can find the file by Googling for it.

The Fn F3,F4,F5 and F6 keys all work OK - but I have turned UAC off completely so looking back through this thread that may be why.

Bluetooth installed with the OS installation and works fine.

I installed the WWAN modem by installing the WWAN driver for XP, then uninstalling the Globetrotter application from the Control Panel (as it didn't work). This seemed to leave the modem drivers behind - and I use the Vaio Smart Switch to control the network connections. I set up the WWAN connection direct from the network and sharing centre in the control panel and set up a standard 3G connection dialling *99# - the usual GPRS/HSPDA number. (You may need your network providers APN details for this connection to work properly.)

I have installed the camera drivers (VGP-VCC7) from the vaio x64 site above - the Device Manager shows it installed correctly - but I cannot get the camera to work with any applications - the application does not recognise the camera - so like many on this thread I'd be interested in any news about getting the camera working with Win 7 x64.

Otherwise - it seems to be a good OS - fast - and without the Vista bloat.

As an interest note - Windows Server 2008 R2 is based on the Windows 7 kernel - and is worth having a look at. It requires much more work to get it working but I have it running on my T61 Thinkpad and is fast and reliable. Bluetooth was a real challenge - but the BlueSoleil stack works fine. The evaluation period for Win Server 2008 R2 looks as if it will go beyond the 1 Aug date for Windows 7 and there are plenty of sites with details of how to turn server 2008 into a workstation OS. I might have a look at installing it on my VAIO.

Can anyone give me please the Audio-Driver?
I've downloaded the one from SONY but can't install it.

Every time I try to install the driver I get an error message "Another instance of setup is running".
Even after a couple of reboots.

    Thanks for helping.

I'm running an SZ460N and have tried many drivers, including the Ricoh drivers for the VCC3 with no luck. I've got the VCC5. That's the only thing that's not working on my Win 7 install.

Anyone else having issues with their volume controls not working after you wake up from sleep or hibernate? Restarting the event service fixes the volume but breaks the brightness control and OSD.

Finally brightness controll buttons are working for Intel AND nvidia!

What I did..installed latest Windows 7 build 7127 and its working. I actually upgraded from build 7100 RC, where brightness only worked for intel.

Now all we need is camera driver and TPM software.

All Sony camera drivers for 32-bit Vista includes 64 drivers too. Extract them using Uniextract and update the driver.

Everything is working for me (TPM , Camera / Sony Camera Software, Brightness etc.)

Just can't get the cardreader to work.
I've updated the drivers for the "unknown device" (device-manager) and got
"Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller.
    - But the drive-letter doesn't appear :(

    Any idea?

Been using 7100 RTM 32 bit on my SZ3VP since it was out. Only issue I seem to have run into is brightness control going out of whack. It tends to happen usually when you resume from Sleep, but only if you have previously resumed from Hibernate. The OSD is visible onscreen, but using the Fn keys has no impact on the actual brightness. At other times, the brightness controls will work, but actual brightness is out of sync with the OSD. ie actual brightness is 0, but OSD reports as 5, then actual brightness 2 but OSD reports as 7 etc.

Only happens with Intel graphics. Simple solution for now is just to disable Hibernate, or do a restart if it happens. A reboot is handiest since it only takes about a minute to reboot with this wonderful new OS.

Having the same issue. Seems that the drivers are installed correctly (even tried a re-install) but it can't recognise cards when they are inserted.

Kesandal, I can see the memory stick icon, but trying to access the reader doesn't work. Do you at least see the memory stick reader in My Computer?

I'm running Windows 7 x64 on my Sony VGN-SZ650N. I've seen some other posts from people that have gotten their camera working. I downloaded the 64-bit version of the camera drivers, windows recognizes it fine and applications think they are using it, it's just that the green light never comes on and the screen stays black. Anyone had any luck?

I've tried to put a card into the slot..
And... surprise... Windows was showing in "My Computer" the drive.

Do you see the icon even if you don't have a card inserted?

I haven't been able to find any x64 driver for the VCC5. I've tried x64 drivers from other models but I just get a black image and no green light.

I'm using the VPM from SZ780N since it's the latest version. I can't the the VAIO Power Management tab to show up in power options, but if you run SPMView.exe from the program files for VPM it lets you adjust the vaio options. I've gained about 1 hour of battery life implementing it over the standard win 7 options.

Kesandal, I have a SZ650N and mine came with VCC7. What driver are you using to get Win7 x64 to work? Mine seems to show up as a VCC7 but the green light never turns on and all the applications just show a blank screen.

    Hi,
Yours is the most authoritative post that I've found re. installing Windows 7 on Sony Vaio: so hoping you can shed some light on the following.
I've installed the Windows 7 RC on my Sony Vaio VGN-SZ1VP notebook here in the UK.
Everything's hunky dory apart from one thing - it only displays in a 4:3 aspect ratio rather than widescreen.
My video card is described as a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, whilst the monitor is listed a Generic Pnp. all drivers are listed as being up-to-date.
I've tried downloading a few video driver updates on the Sony site but nothing has helped so far.
Nb. just discovered that this problem only occurs in "SPEED" mode: in "STAMINA" mode it is rectified but only whilsy you remain in Stamina mode (with the attendant loss of system speed.)
Help - I've searched far and wide for a solution but to no avail.
    Regards,
    Andrew

    Hi all,

I appear to be having a bit of a problem download the driver for my Nvidia 8400M GS in Speed Mode on my SZ691N with Windows 7 RC 7100. I had just installed Win7 and followed the guide in the opening post - everything works just fine except for the Camera and when I make the switch to Speed Mode. It does not detect it at a 8400M GS and no such driver exists on Windows Update (no prerelease driver listed).

Is there anything I can do?

    -- UPDATE --

I fixed the problem, I went to Laptop2Go to find a driver compatible with my 8400M GS and used the modified INF with the installation to force install the driver. Now the 8400M GS is detected and run smoothly. Before this, official Nvidia drivers and other drivers without the modified INF would claim my card was not compatible - even though it was. I hope this helps anybody else experiencing similar issues.

tl;dr Trying to get Virtual XP running on my SZ680 on Win 7 x64 RTM

Everyone: this thread has been great and without it I would not have had any clue how to upgrade to Win 7 RTM. I wanted to say thanks as well as ask a question.

I bit the bullet and installed Win 7 x64 on my SZ680 despite some reservations. My main concern with x64 was using Cisco VPN. I know that Cisco does not (and frustratingly has no plans to) support x64 operating systems. However, I found a site that had a supposed workaround for Win 7 using the Virtual XP program:

    http://trimbo.blogspot.com/2009/05/cisco-vpn-under-windows-xp-mode-on.html

I was excited that I could possibly have my cake and eat it too, meaning that I could ditch Vista, upgrade to x64, and still use VPN (I need it to get on my campus network).

After getting my drivers and laptop 99% up and running (almost everything works except for the Webcam LED light) I tried to run Virtual XP.

It doesn't work. Windows tells me that I need to set my BIOS to allow virtualization. I took a look at the BIOS and there does not seem to be any option for that. Did Sony screw me? Is virtualization not allowed on the SZ680 or did I miss something?

I'd like to find out if you all having problem switching the graphic from stamina to speed mode? I can get most of the major features to work except this. The system simply refused to enable the built-in nVidia graphic card even with the switch pointing towards speed mode

Is anyone else having an issue when using the Intel integrated graphics (stamina mode)? When I'm in stmaina mode on battery, the graphics driver crashes a lot, especially when I am using Firefox. I am using Win 7 Ultimate x64 RTM with driver version 8.15.10.1825 for Win 7 ultimate x64 RC from Intel.

AFAIK, the intel driver you used should be the latest available driver from Intel. I'm using this driver on my win2k8 R2 setup (unfortunately my NVIDIA died and I can only work in stamina mode). No problem during the operation except the start up logo animation.
Try installing the driver again from device manager manually.

    Hello,
how did you successfully install the power manager from CR4? I have to say that the power manager is one of the most important stuff to me (actually the way to turn off built-in sound card, dvd, etc.)

Hi guys, I've been lurking here for a while through BETA and RC and I've just installed RTM in anticipation of the arrival of my pre-ordered W7 and I've come across a problem that I have resolved before but am stuck this time. I've installed all the Sony "apps" (control center,Vaio service etc) except the bloat but this time I have no option in the control center to set what happens when I open the lid. I have always had (through XP Vista W7Beta W7RC) the option to turn on the computer. The one thing I thought might be an issue is that I didn't install the Sony chipset drivers as I got a warning from Windows saying they are incompatible. I also had the "battery not installed properly" error but I resolved this by disabling the Sony battery checker in MSCONFIG. I'd love to know if there is any way to fix the lid issue ? :)

I'm having the same problem. I tried installing the nVidia Win7 drivers and the Vista drivers from Sony's website, but no luck. The device manager always shows the Intel card, although I can only get a nice display (i.e. high resolution and reponsiveness) in Stamina mode. So I don't know what is going on. Normally, when in Speed mode, the device manager shows the Nvidia card.

    Has anyone figured this out?
