    (Last update: May 19 2014)

Works with Windows 7 and Windows 8*

Note: You must disable the driver signature enforcement in Windows 8 before installing the modded IDT or Nvidia drivers. Click here for instructions

    * Sony brightness control (fn key) does not work with Windows 8.

The following steps below include various driver sources and install instructions.

    1. Install your edition of Windows 7. I chose to change the UAC setting to never notify. If you leave it in the default setting, various prompts may open when installing the drivers and utilities. Open "Computer", click the "Organize" tab, navigate to "folder and search options", click "View" tab, and uncheck "Hide empty drives in the computer folder". Also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". There will be two exclamation marks for the "Mass storage controller" and "Unknown device" in the device manager. Intel 4965 Wifi, Marvell network controller, and Conexant modem drivers are included in Windows 7. You can update them if necessary. Download the appropriate 32/ 64-bit drivers wherever applicable.

    2. Intel PM965/ GM965 chipset software 10.0.13:

    Download link : downloadmirror.intel.com/20775/eng/SetupChipset.exe

Open the "Run" command from start, browse to "SetupChipset.exe", add "-overall" without the quotes with a space after SetupChipset.exe to update all possible chipset devices. You can check the devices updated during the installation process. Reboot as required. When you are updating to this version, you must re-install the SATA/ AHCI driver, as this version of the chipset software overwrites the SATA driver installed already with a older driver. This re-install is not required if the chipset software is installed after the clean install of Windows 7.

    3. Intel Rapid Storage Technology (SATA/AHCI) driver 10.1.0.1008:

    32-bit : http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20104/eng/STOR_F6_32_10.1.0.1008_PV.exe
    64-bit : http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20104/eng/STOR_F6_64_10.1.0.1008_PV.exe

Unpack the driver, and update the driver from the device manager for the AHCI controller.

    4. Nvidia Verde WHQL driver (Vaio FZ, AR, AW, CS & CW) :

    32-bit driver: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/331.65/331.65-notebook-win8-win7-32bit-international-whql.exe
    64-bit driver: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/331.65/331.65-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe

Extract the downloaded driver using 7-zip/ Uniextract. Now download the attached "Nvidia 3xx.xx" zip file (see end of the guide), and extract the appropriate 32/ 64-bit "nvszcn" inf file. Copy/ replace the "nvszcn" inf file into "Display.Driver" folder of the extracted driver package. Disable any Antivirus software, and run the "setup" in the driver pack. In the Nvidia install screen, choose "Custom Install", uncheck "Nvidia Update", 3D Vision components, check "Physx system software" if you want Physx, HD Audio if you have Nvidia audio device, check "Perform Clean install", and click next to continue. Ignore the Windows security warning to finish installing the driver, and restart as prompted.

    Uniextract download link : http://legroom.net/scripts/download.php?file=uniextract161_noinst

    7-zip download link : 7-Zip

4.1 Nvidia 257.41 WHQL driver (MS Update) :

Use this driver if you prefer a digitally signed driver.

    32-bit driver: http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._2b4825f23573cc5aa3f88e4709b610e39f8283f0.cab
    64-bit driver: http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._ec2b1ff7583e06ca7fe70161c0ad9be0e549583f.cab

You should extract the downloaded cab file using 7-Zip or Uniextract. Run the setup.exe in the driver package to install.

    4.2 Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator driver 15.12.75.4.1930

Install this driver if your FZ has an Intel GMA X3100.

    64-bit driver : http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...D=&DwnldId=18228&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng

ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/MEMORY CARD READER WRITER DRIVER TI 2.0R_2.0.0.19.ZIP
Run the setup.exe in the driver package.

    7. IDT / Sigmatel Audio modded driver 6.10.6370.0:

    Download link : http://www.mediafire.com/download/hezlhi6wj5ib5y9/IDT+Audio+6370.exe

This driver was released by Intel. Double click the downloaded "exe" file to extract the driver package. Uninstall the current IDT driver (if installed) and restart. Run the setup in the driver package, ignore the Windows warning, and reboot as prompted. To use the Stereo Mix feature, enable it from recording devices, and increase the recording level.

    8. Ricoh (Sony VGP-VCC4) camera driver 6.1008.207.0:

    http://s02.download.sony.com/US/pc/SODCAM-12842500-US.EXE

S-button: ( thanks to NBR users ZoinksS2k and Kaloo for their posts)
Instructions and the necessary modified files are attached (Special button_VCC.zip) for S button functionality. You should be able to change the S button setting from a drop down list now. All I did was to include the FZ's model ID in the Setting utility series and Vaio Control center config files. The model config file (M18999.xml) has the S button setting with the settings as func ID's from C:\ProgramData\Sony Corporation\Setting Utility Series\Function. This process also brings up Vaio status monitor, HDMI resolution setting, Video&Photo color setting, Button setting, and Document Zoom in the Vaio Control center. See attached Vaio Control Center picture for available options and settings.

Vaio Launcher 3.0.0.07150 (AV Mode button) (optional - needed to make AV button functional)

    http://s02.download.sony.com/US/pc/SOAOTH-70193336-US.EXE

Run the setup.exe using the method described in step 9. The AV mode button's function is useless. You can edit the registry to make the button launch useful apps. Open "regedit", navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sony Corporation\VAIO Launcher\AV Mode Launcher (No Wow6432Node for 32-bit). Double click "InstalledAVmodeLauncher" to modify the the path to launch your own programs.

Wireless Switch Switching Utility : This doesn't work as expected with 64-bit. But you can switch the wireless band (2.4/5 GHz) from the advanced properties of the Intel 4965 adapter. Double click the Intel 4965 adapter in device manager, click the "Advanced" tab, change the "Wireless mode" in the Property pane, and change the value (a - 5 Ghz, b - 2.4 GHz, g - 2.4 GHz, default - a/b/g and n enabled). Right click the "Generic Bluetooth Adapter/ Bluetooth USB Controller(ALPS/UGPZ6)" from device manager and disable the Bluetooth radio, but the blue light will be ON still. This utility works fine in 32-bit after some hacking.
Thanks to user Vadja73 for finding the hack and Gary for testing/ making it work in the FZ-190.

I installed Win 7 64-bit and everything went pretty smoothly except one problem. The display dimming stops working after closing my lid once, but works again if I reboot... This happened when I had Win 7 32-bit installed as well. It's not too big of a problem.. but it'd be nice if anyone new a fix.

Also, do you know where I can get the wireless switch utility that came with the laptop? The utility that shows a green/blue (wireless/bluetooth) icon on the bottom right. Reason I'd like it is because it let me turn on 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless modes. I've tried installing the original wireless driver, hoping the software came with it and would then just update the driver, but no luck. I couldn't find it on the intel website either...

    Thanks!

Make sure you note that Rajesh's guide is for 64 bit NOT 32 bit. The process for 32 bit will be the same but the links for drivers will not!

As he mentioned at the bottom of his guide, I have done an inplace upgrade from Vista to Win7 and it worked GREAT. In the past, when switching OS versions, I would have done a clean install, but the architecture of Win7 and Vista are so similar I decided to treat this as if it were a service pack. I think my intuition was right, because unlike any older upgrade of an OS (like from Win2k to Win XP, or WinXP to Vista) I actually GAINED disk space. I recovered over 6gb when the upgrade was complete. And it sure is easier than reinstalling ALL the apps I have on this machine.

If you are going to 64 bit mode, by all means use this guide. But if you are staying in 32 bit, consider an inplace upgrade. (See my signature line for a link to my notes.)

I don't have the display dimming problem. Make sure you have it set right in the advanced power options. The Wireless Switch Switching utility doesn't work in 64-bit. This is because of the different 64-bit Sony shared library being used. Our original 32-bit apps came with Sony shared library and Sony utilities DLL, which are not available in 64-bit. So, this is the only limitation in 64-bit. You can try a different utility like Vaio Smart network from the FTP site (I tried not working for me).

Hey, I was planning on doing the same conversion on my FZ-140E, which I believe is identical to the 190E with the exception of the graphics card and the bluetooth. I have 2 questions:
    1) Since it just uses the integrated graphics card do I need a different driver or will it be covered by the same drivers you have?
    2) Other people have noticed that after converting to the 64 bit windows 7, their battery runs out extremely quickly due to some problem in power management. Have you guys noticed this on your laptops?

    1) You need a 64-bit Intel graphics driver, which is not included in my guide. You can try the latest driver from the FTP here ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/WI...DRIVER_INTEL_TYPE2_64_8.15 - 8.15.10.1855.ZIP. Check whether your intel X3100 card is supported by opening the .inf file in the driver pack. You can also try this intel driver below
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...et+Family&ProdId=2800&LineId=1088&FamilyId=40

    2) I don't have any issue with the battery running out quick. I didn't have the Vaio Power management installed (which does nothing except disabing 2 devices).

this absolutely saved me, everything is working except the volume/playback controll pad.

Any chance anyone figured that out? or if theres a drive already listed that does the trick?

The vol/ play controls work even without any drivers. The OSD is what you require Sony drivers and apps for.

I followed your instructions and i still cant get it goin.

When i extract out the files and tell the driver update to look for it, it tells me the drivers it has are the most up to date.

If i try to point to a specific file, i can't becuase theres no INF file in the folder?

    Suggestions?

    Thanks

The camera driver is for Ricoh model VGP-VCC4. What camera do you have? You can find this from the original supplied drivers.

I am still working to find a right utility that woks in 64-bit. You can try Vaio Smart network from the FTP site.

I imagine it has to do with the order I've installed drivers etc. but if I unplug my notebook it loses all power within 5 minutes maximum. I've tried several versions of Power Management with no luck. If you're not having the same issue it must be my process.

    Hi

I currently am running Vista 64bit Home edition on my FW490. I am expecting my Windows 7 package by tomorrow. I assumed that I would have no problem running an inplace upgrade from Vista 64 bit. Is there any reason why you recommend that route for 32 bit only?

Only becasuse I only tried it myself on 32 bit. It may work great. It is certainly worth trying, worst case you have to do a clean install. So prepare for that worse case before you start. And report your findings once you are done, over in my Upgrade install notes thread.

I suspect that your battery is dead. Download "Battery bar" and check the wear level.

Well that didn't tell me anything I don't already know. I know the battery declines and an very accelerated rate. What I don't know is if this is software or hardware related. Thanks for the link though.

    Thanks for the guide!

    two questions:

    1) What about the driver for the VGP-VCC8 webcam? Can I use the same driver as the VCC4 (posted in your guide)?

    2) anyone tried this guide on an European FZ (I own a FZ21M)? I think its practically the same right, (mine has a 8400M GT 256MB, T7250 2,0Ghz, 2GB RAM, DVD+-RW and BluRay, 200GB harddisk). Anyone familiar with the differences between US and European models in general?

    Thanks!

Mwep, you cannot use the VCC-4 driver. But you can try installing it.

Ok thanks for your quick reply. Any idea whether the other drivers are more general (i.e. the TI driver if I have TI hardware installed)? And where to look for/find a VCC-4 driver?
Will start with a Win7 install on a new partition (won't format the Vista (x86)partition right away) so I can try different drivers.

You can extract your Vista camera driver using Universal extractor software and see inside the folder if it supports 64-bit (contains X64 or XXX64.inf). The TI drivers are general and they will install in your FZ. If a right driver is not available, Windows won't install that driver. So you are safe to try different drivers.

Thanks for all your pioneering work on this coolguy.

I'm going to attempt to move from Vista Home Premium 32bit to Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit once I muster enough courage to do so (hopefully in a few days).

Meanwhile, I have a few rookie questions:
    1. Could you provide more detail on your successful clean-install process: for example, (a) can I download all these drivers / applications after Windows 7 starts on my FZ or do I have to save some of these drivers / applications to a DVD drive / USB stick prior to starting the clean-install process? Could you provide a very basic sequence (example: shutting off virus scan software, etc) of your performing the clean-install process?
    2. In your opinion, would most of the drivers you used work on the VGN FZ 4000 as well? From what I know, the chipset's the same
    3. I've saved the ISO image on a USB stick. However, Sony tech support tells me that I won't be able to boot using a USB stick. What method did you use (or did you have the Win 7 disks)?

    1. You can download all the drivers and applications after the clean install. Anyway it's safe to have a backup of these. Don't install any antivirus program until you have installed all the drivers and apps.

    2. The drivers should be the same for FZ-4000 except some hardware. Visit the Sony support site for specific information.

    3. I ran the clean install from my USB flash drive (took less than 20 mins to clean install). I used the Microsoft tool to make a bootable USB. Link : http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool
Make sure you have your FZ's bios set to boot from USB hard disk. Under advanced tab, enable external drive boot. In the boot order set USB hard disk, and USB flash in the first 2 entries.

I am not having any battery drain issue. It drains down quickly from 100% to 90% and slowing down a bit below that. Also the standard FZ battery doesn't even hold for 2 hrs.

Clean install per Coolguy's guide worked perfectly - all systems go (almost).

BD player playing everything except blu-ray discs...any ideas on a driver?

How about it Coolguy or kevf74. Right now I have the nvidia driver from Coolguy's Win7 x64 clean install guide. All seems to be working fine and Cyberlink PowerDVD says everything is in order to play blu-ray's...the problem is that the blu-ray just spins a few times and never is recognized by the computer or the BD software - keeps telling me to insert disc into drive!

Is it possible that the "Dox" nvidia hybrid driver could be the solution here? Everyone's help and expertise is greatly appreciated!

    mwep --

how quickly does your battery drain completely? mine appears to be done within 5 minutes. i have tried several power management drivers and a few other things. no luck. i have thought maybe my battery is the culprit but have searched online and can't seem to find a replacement battery anywhere. not sure what my next steps are.

    Update:

Dox 185.85 nvidia driver from laptopvideo2go finally has my blu-ray drive reading and recognizing discs properly and playing better than ever with Cyberlink PowerDVD 9. I have not come across any other driver that worked for me with respect to the blu-ray problem I had.

Sony Vaio VGN-FZ190 CTO upgrade from Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit - all systems go Captain! And with ZERO percent help from Sony! I couldn't have done it without this forum. Thanks a million guys!

Then there are one of two issues. Either you did them in the wrong order (the sequence is VERY important) or you have the wrong version of some of the apps and/or drivers. The process is known to work on more that just Rajesh's machine.

    Br00x,

You need to use a more current version of the VAIO Event Service:

    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/VAIO_EVENT_SERVICE_5.0_A_5.0.0.06261.ZIP

Version 4.x of the VAIO Event Service does not work reliably with Windows 7. The service often stops running after hibernating or sleeping. You can manually restart the service, but in my experience the audio Fn functions then stop working. Rebooting will "fix" it, re-enabling both audio and video Fn functions until the next hibernate cycle.

Feel free to read through my guide for other info on installing Windows 7 64-bit:

What GPU do you have? If it is intel X3100, you need to install the intel GPU 64-bit driver (not included in my guide) for adjusting display brightness.
