This works fine with 8600M GS on my VGN-FZ31Z and Windows 10. It seems a new laptop ahah!!

    In 341.74 Drivers

    Unpack with 7Zip

    Open nv_dispi

    copy this
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0425% = Section028, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0425

    in the lists:
    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.0]
    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.1]
    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.2]
    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.3]

    copy this:
    NVIDIA_DEV.0425 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS"

    in the list:
    [Strings]
DiskID1 = "NVIDIA Windows (64 bit) Driver Library Installation Disk 1"

Be happy with your old laptop ;)

It's one thing to have the driver installed, and another thing to have the driver properly installed & configured, for each laptop's model monitor, if you see what I mean....
I can mod at least 5 .inf's, the driver will install BUT modding nvszci.inf will give you optimal results, for reasons I'm too bored to explain... ;)
I used to mod with earlier driver versions nvszcn.inf BUT since 337.88 whql, Nvidia renamed that file to nvszci.inf, it has the same structure with a different name.

    Cheers,

@sonyfz440e : it all seems to work fine!

Initially I had a problem with the Intel 4965 wireless card which at every Windows boot it was somewhat off and I had to troubleshoot for issues every time to get it working, but then I had the idea to go to Devices -> Wireless Cards -> Intel 4965AGN -> then on Properties you have to deactivate the Power Save Mode so the card can remain always on ;-)

Other than that it all seems to work fine, even though sometimes checking for Windows updates takes an infinite time and I don't even know right now if it's a problem or if Windows can update itself without me checking manually for updates. It was settled to search and install updates automatically but I don't know why, since 2-3 days, I can't have a simple "No updates available".. :)

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I have installed Windows 10 x64.Windows keeps installing Nvidia 341.74.But I realized that this has issues with hardware acceleration. As far as I know,CUDA support is discontinued after 337.88.Thats why even we can install later drivers, for some software,we will face troubles.

How can we mod an inf file so that windows see it as the best driver?Changing date or version number or what?I want to keep 337.88 and dont want windows install 341.74.

How can windows know a driver is the best?Is there anyway to trick windows?

No, I wouldn't updating this guide for Windows 10.
I am no longer using my FZ. But I could help you with modifying the driver if you want.

Surprised to see this thread still alive!!!

    any clues?

I attached the modded inf of R341.92
Still preliminary version; I'm testing it on win 7 x64 and NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS

If you know how to use feel free to post a feedback

I have a Vaio FZ31S and I finally figured out how to install the Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS driver (341.92) after I did a clean install of Windows 10.

    Steps:
    1. Go to the Device Manager in the Control Panel. Click on the "Display Adapter" and double-click on the Nvidia driver (this could be the original Vista / XP drivers previously installed).
    2. Go to the "Details" tab and select the "Matching Device Id" property. You will see the "Value" which is the driver ID. Save this in Notepad or somewhere else as you will need this for later.
    3. Install the Nvidia Driver until you receive the error: "Nvidia graphics driver can not find compatible graphics hardware". This is perfectly fine as will install the following files in:C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver.
    4. Go to the following folder: C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\341.92\Win8_WinVista_Win7\International\Display.Driver. Here you will find a file called: nvszci.inf
    5. You will need to copy the following the line:%NVIDIA_DEV.0425.02% = Section002, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0425&SUBSYS_9005104D (if you are installing a different Graphics card driver then replace the "Dev.0425"/"Dev_0425", "9005.104D" (note the period between)/"SUBSYS_9005104D" and "VEN_10DE" with the relevant values from the previous value you saved in Notepad (the "Matching Device Id" property from the Device Manager).
    6. The line needs to be added in the under the following headings:
      1. [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTx86.6.0]
      2. [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTx86.6.1]
      3. [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTx86.6.2]
      4. [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTx86.6.3]
    7. Finally, you will need to scroll to the bottom of the nvszci.inf fileand find (or ctrl-F and search for:) "[Strings]"
    8. You will need to add the following line: "NVIDIA_DEV.0425.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS "" - again if you have a different Graphics card driver change it what you previously added in (from the Matching Device Id etc.).
    9. Go to the folder: C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\341.92\Win8_WinVista_Win7\International. Now right click on "setup.exe" and click on: "Run as administrator"
This should now work :). Good luck!!

    Hello guys,

I would like to install Windows 10 on my FZ31S, but I am very bad IT man. More accurate instruction is needed for me (aka first post for Windows 7 and 8))). Does anybody create instruction for clean install Windows 10 for FZ-series?

    Thanks

Hello guys, I don't know if it's relevant to say but since two/three or more versions of the official Nvidia drivers, I can just install those without having to modify the .inf files.

And they seem to work just fine, so for example now I have the latest 341.95 installed on Windows 10 Anniversary Update (1607).

I don´t read the whole thread, because it have now 147 sites  But there are some new drivers, if someone posted it already, then sorry for doublepost:

SFEP (Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver) 8.0.2.3 (32bit/64bit)
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/SONY_SFEPDRIVER.ZIP

Texas Instruments Memory Card Driver 2.0.0.20
It seems that this is only 32bit Driver, because there is only one .inf file, I don´t try them on my 64bit Win7.
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/MEMORY%20CARD%20READER%20WRITER%20DRIVER%20TI_2.0T_2.0.0.20.ZIP

Can someone please help me with the Win7 64bit Driver for the Webcam Ricoh (Sony VGP-VCC4). I can not find them. Thanks.

    Hello
It's been over 5 years since I last posted here on this thread. Stopped by to say that my Vaio FZ-290 is still running strong and will be 9 years old this November!

Windows 10 v1607 runs great on this laptop. If anyone has any trouble running Win10 on an FZ series laptop, please feel free to post your issues and I will do my best to help.

Thank you again coolguy (aka Rajesh) for all of your help. If it weren't for you, none of us would have figured out how to install Windows 7 on these laptops back in the day. Your expertise and knowledge has kept my Vaio FZ from the brink of obsolescence.

You're 100% right on everything and I still have it running well with an SSD (the first Samsung 830).
The only issue I have is that every day I'm getting random reboots due to, I think, a driver issue with the Intel 4965 wireless card.

Have you guys had the same behavior as mine? Any solution would be much appreciated :)
    Thanks again!

Iperzampem0, I haven't experienced any of those symptoms, but I also almost never use the Intel WiFi Link 4965 card. My laptop mostly stays plugged in to Ethernet.

I would suggest trying the latest available driver for Win7 which is 13.4.0.139. Its a couple months newer than the default driver installed with Win8-Win10. If that does not resolve your issue, you may want to consider buying a USB wireless adapter.

You might also want to try replacing the Intel Wifi Link 4965 card with something newer, like the Intel Wireless AC 7260 card. This is not guaranteed to work though and you would have to fully disassemble the Vaio and purchase a bracket to fit it in.

@no1uknow Thanks for your suggestion, I've updated a few days ago the WiFi driver to the very latest available but random reboots still happens after a while, seems more like when the Vaio is in idle (not into sleep mode though), but I've also disabled, since the Windows 10 installation, the power setting of the Intel card to not go into sleep.

I don't remember the exact error code that I can see for a few seconds when the Blue screen of death appears, but it's surely related to a network component, either the WiFi or the Ethernet driver/chipset (?).

Hello guys, after a long while I have again complete access to my old VAIO FZ21M (my father was using it for the past 2 years until he got a new Dell Inspiron 15 5567) so I can test things and hopefully have a completely usable machine like it was in its first days of life :D

Starting from some good techie-things, I've successfully installed a copy of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB, which I can say that I wasn't even aware of and it's basically a stripped down version of Windows 10 (as I like!) without EVERY preinstalled Windows 10 universal apps (like even the Store) and without Edge. It's like having a "Windows 7 slimmed edition" but officially distributed and supported by Microsoft, designed (mostly obviously) for companies which don't want to have to upgrade every once and then, and have useful apps.

Apart from that intro, I want to say that after a slightly long search on the internet I have been able to install and configure almost all of the available drivers and apps for this Sony laptop (as stated in the first page) along with the working brightness & audio controls using the Fn keys!!! :)

To do this I have installed all the following updated software:
    - Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device v8.0.2.3 (this one was posted by @Gineon some posts ago)
    - Sony Setting Utility Series v5.3.0.07231 ( https://mega.nz/#!pl01ERxb!syKhYmSGT1-o9cYi5uytb3B2xAoZzvm8fZiSAqpgp_8)
    - Sony Shared Library v5.7.0.06070, then v5.10.0.12150 and finally v6.3.0.05080 ( https://mega.nz/#!l49HBALb!roTek-qSsvQpawkQYuW-EA1yoUKS579u3XG1dIuqCPk)
    - VAIO Event Service v5.3.0.05310 ( https://mega.nz/#!NtlUAb4Y!Zy4lYxVbcHqDF6DNqkgm__VjjqEn0j9jhdsm05-1Y2M)
I have to say that unfortunately I don't remember the correct order of these setups but it should be right.
Furthermore I think you can skip Shared Library 5.10, so just install 5.7 and then 6.3.

After that I've also installed the updated version of VAIO Control Center v4.3.0.05310 ( https://mega.nz/#!Ul0BgCIY!z0wPdzfLJ1toaToZ8LVzlKSaQCAZvxj23Pck5eskjPc) and, along with the "Special button VCC" instructions in the first post, I have also configured the S1 button to launch any app I want it to. Next I may try to install VAIO Launcher and get also the "AV Mode" button to work, will keep you updated.

That's it for now! I hope you can find this post helpful. ;)
Note: take in mind that I have the latest Nvidia drivers 342.01 installed (which by the way Windows 10 installed and updated automatically), so I didn't even need to change any values to get the Fn keys working.
--- I wasn't able to install the Audio drivers posted here, so I'm sticking with the default Windows 10 audio drivers which they seem to be working just fine.

    Hey there!
I've tried to configure also the "AV Mode" button, installing VAIO Launcher, but I haven't been able to do so.

EDIT: I've replaced the old Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (clocked at 2Ghz with 2Mb Cache) for the T9300 (clocked at 2.5 Ghz with 6Mb Cache) and it's all working smoothly without any issues!

EDIT 2: I have also thought about buying a new wireless card because of the BSOD I was having since about an year (with the latest Intel 13.4.0.139 driver) and since the upgrade to Windows 10. But right now I've discovered that enabling JUST the 5Ghz band of the integrated Intel 4965 card I have no more blue screens and the network performance is awesome like it has always been.
It's also quite notable to say that the Intel 4965agn wifi card is an actual "Full Mini PCIe" card and nowadays almost all of the new Intel wifi cards are at least "Half Mini PCIe", so it could be a problem for us , at least regarding the length of the 3 antennas (yea, also new cards have mostly 2 antennas). Just saying...

Guys, just asking but... have anyone tried to install 8gb of DDR2 RAM (667-800Mhz) in a PM965 chipset?
Just my curiosity, prices for 2x4gb DDR2 Ram are SOOO expensive right now, like around 150€.

And what about the WiFi card? Someone changed the original Intel with a new one? :)

I have a different model chipset, but from what I've learned over the years,
    1. RAM is best organised as dual channel - two identical sticks of RAM which gets you twice the effective speed of a single stick. If one of your RAM sticks has died, and if the chipset supports it, you could use a single 8 GB stick in conjunction with the 4 GB stick to get dual channel performance for the 4 GB + 4 GB and single channel performance for the remaining 4 GB.
    2. Head over to Intel.com and look at the specs for the chipset to see what RAM it can support. Not a good idea to deviate from those specs. If it says 8 GB per bank is allowed, you may put in an 8 GB stick.
