After many installations, I was finally able to get windows 7 running good on my computer. Good meaning that FN hotkeys work for volume, brightness, and vga output. All the drivers are installed correctly.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 7600-16385 x86 and used this thread as a guide to install the drivers. I downloaded the orginal Vista drivers (sony vaio vista update drivers did not install correctly for me) from sony support website, NOT XP DRIVERS. Upon download, I made sure to right click and run as "vista" mode.
Also, for some of the drivers I had to goto device and manager and install the drivers with "have disk" option. And for some drivers, I had to use uniextract to bypass the detection settings.

This is just a summary of what I did- used a combination of fresh XP install on sz220 (found here in sticky of helpful threads) and clean sz6 install thread (linked above).

Problems thus far: batter drains extremely quick. Vaio Power Management (VPM) may disable your sound card, you must re-enable the sound through VPM options by click on the battery and advance configurations.
If you would like step-by-step direction, I can try to retrace my steps. I don't konw if anyone will.

    Windows 7 Clean Install

I was able to get my hands on Windows 7 Build 7600 16385 x86 (supposedly the RTM version) and these are the procedures I took the create a clean install of Windows 7. Note that I installed in "SPEED" mode and once I booted into Windows 7, I allowed the computer to Windows Update immediately. I shut down the computer and swiched over to "STAMINA" mode and allowed the drivers to load accordingly, through detection and through automatic internet update. Thereafter, the computer asked to restart.

    1. Download Intel Chipset driver from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...utol.exe&DwnldId=16023&ProductID=816&lang=eng and "Run as Adminstrator" in "Stamina" mode. Shut down and switched over to "Speed" mode.

    2. Download nVidia Display Drivers Update (1/30/2007) for Vista from http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNSZ220&upd_id=2487&os_id=27. Note: Right click on the driver and goto "Properties." Click on "Compatibility" and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows Vista." After installation, Windows will automatically reboot itself without warning, unless you have other programs open.

    4. Download Sony Utilities DLL Update (01/30/2007) for Vista from http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNSZ220&upd_id=2453&os_id=27. Click on "Compatibility" and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows Vista."

At this point all hot keys (FN+ F3/F4/F5 etc.) should be working. If you go to Devices Manager, you will see 2 devices without drivers,

    13. Mass Storage - download Texas Instrument Flash

    14. Unknow device, this is your camera, you need to download http://rs41.rapidshare.com/files/70224840/VAIO_VGP-VCC_CAMERA_DRIVERS_FOR_WINDOWS_XP_AND_VISTA.zip and manually goto your devices manager (right click on "my computer" and goto "properties," select "devices manager"). In device manager, you will right click and select "update driver" and select "browse folder" (include subfolder) and select "VCC2-VID_05CA_PID_1830-v1.0.2.9--SZ1_SZ2_SZ3" folder.

    Hope this helps!

What version of Windows 7 are you all installing? I have a copy of ultimate and I'm a little leary to run it since I have Vista Home Preimun running (kinda) on my machine.

Thanks to Eastbay for all his legwork!
