I'm a bit lost with Sony terminology to what I need to install in order for the function keys to work.

all I find in the drivers section for this computer are the software updates and not the driver needed itself.

I'm noob to Sony laptops. is there a Sont program that can automatically download the drivers for me? Something like SystemUpdate in Lenovo?

    thx for your reply.

do you refer to the Vista downloads or the Windows7 downloads?

actually many of the drivers you listed were found automatically by windows SP1. right after setup finished, it downloaded the Intel chipset and the parser file. the only driver I needed to download myself is the TI card reader driver.

from the long list in your article what do I need in order for the FN keys to work? I'm not familiar with the different Sony components and i can't find which driver is needed.

You need the Sony shared library (installed first), Setting utility series, Vaio event service the and Vaio Control center. Make sure you have the GPU driver installed.

I'm definitely made some progress as now the VAIO Control Center show much more setting then before. the volume keys (up, down, mute) works but without showing anything on the screen.
the brightness up and down keys still doesn't work. I've got the latest Intel video driver, but I've noticed that the screen is recognized as generic PNP. haven't found any screen driver in sony site.

is this related to the function keys?

    what about this method here?

You need to install the Sony software in the correct order. You can refer to any working guide.
First uninstall all Sony stuff, and then re-install in the required order.

You might have messed up something before. The SFEP driver in my guide is a newer version than the one coming from Windows Update, the older version is supposed to cause BSOD's with Windows 7.

I've done a completely new install and installed drivers only from the windows 7 page of my support computer. there is no unknown driver to install the SFEP for. this are INF files and you can only update drivers with them.

I've followed the mini guide and installed without the power management and everything works. just wanted this to be solved for future searches.

The Sony software/ drivers in my guide are essentially the same versions as mentioned in your model's support page.

The only important thing is that you need to follow a certain order in installing Sony software.

as I've said the "unknown device" doesn't appear so you cant install it's driver for example.
