Sisters laptop, a Sony Viao E-series (VPCEA16FG) bought 14months back has a dying HDD. Windows keeps throwing "HDD going to fail" errors and load times have gone into several minutes. Made recovery discs (twice), bought a 320 GB WD HDD ( link) to replace the Samsung 500 GB ( link) one. Installed the HDD and loaded up the recovery disc. Installation goes fine via VAIO Recovery Center > restore complete system, I'm asked to remove the 4th recovery disc, the laptop restarts and starts to load the setup. Then I get the “Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware”.

Anyone know why?? Is this something to do with AHCI - IDE HDD problem or is the fact that the new HDD is smaller in size the problem?

    Thanks in advance

Do a clean install of your operating system then add the drivers.

I think it's an issue with alignment or whatever on some of these new drives. Search around here (problem with factory restore, etc.) and you'll find the solution.
