Windows Update has stopped working on my machine (VAIO SA, running Windows 7 SP1). it cannot download anything anymore. i've tried all the guides and fixes i could find (including Windows Update fix utilities from Microsoft), but nothing worked. i also did a system restore, but the problem persisted. the thing is that with the current state of my machine, the wuauserv service keeps using 25% of the CPU all the time, so i get a lot of battery drain and heat and fan noise, even though the laptop cannot actually update anything anymore.
has anybody had to deal with this issue before?

It is probably trying to see if your system can be upgraded to Windows 10. This will take several hours. You can either leave it running overnight (plug in the adapter and set 'shut down after' to 'never' in power options), or you can opt out of the free upgrade to Windows 10 offer.

my searches never got me to this thread...
EDIT: didn't work! thanks again for the help though...Last edited: Aug 25, 2015 -
One of the fixes for Windows Update involves deleting the WU database of installed updates. After that it takes a long time again to check the installed files against the available updates and determine which updates you need.

yes, that's what i did! it didn't work at first (or it seemed like it was not going to work), but after one hour, it started to finally download the updates. thanks a lot for the link.
