Why isn't my FN key working in Vista? I downloaded and installed the Sony Event Services as some of you did whose function key is now working but mine still does nothing, I still can't control the brightness of the display. I'm using an SZ 160 with Vista build 5278.
Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong?
Also when I tried to reinstall the Service Event in the possibility that it didn't install corrctly during the install it stops and says Event Services is already installed. How can I uninstall it? When I search for the file I can't seem to find it.

    Same here, RC2.
Fn keys are working, S1 and S2 are working, too. BUT still can't change the birghtness and volume.

I just installed vista x86 rc2 and the function keys work great. I can adjust brightness and sound volumn. The drivers I have problem are wireless and Toshiba bluetooth. Though, the wireless works great with the default drivers from vista. So it is not a problem. I will test if the default bluetooth driver from vista works on my logitech V270 or not.

With RC1 and build 5728 with the Event Service installed, the Fn key works. I can't change the volume or mute it. However, changing the contrast works.

I've just downloaded and installed RC2 (build 5744). Good new the sound card works right away ! (including recording)
I haven't installed any packages yet.

Webcam, trackpad aren't working. The fingerpring reader isn't recognized now (not that it matters as the Protector Suite will not work anyway).

Will install some drivers later today and let you know

I have tried messenger live and my webcam worked. Also, the trackpad worked as well. Though, the function key to adjust brightness only worked in Stamina mode. It's always full brightness in Speed mode. I am still working on it. If I can find a way to adjust it, I will share with you guys.

Ok. I got the fn keys working in RC2..

I did a clean install of both RC1 and RC2 just to find a consistent way of getting the Fn key working.

Here is how I did it:
    Install RC1 or RC2.
Start a Windows Update to install the Sony IO drivers.

run SODOTH-00445800-US.EXE (Sony Notebook control device driver)
run SODSPI-00445700-US.EXE (Sony® Programmable I/O Control Device Driver Utility)
    run SOASSL-00598801-US.EXE (Sony shared library)
    run SOAVES-01205105-US.EXE (Sony Event Service)

    each time when prompted reboot

Changing the volume using Fn has no effect, but the contrast works

I just reinstalled and tried it, still not working.
    1. Windows Update install notebook control device driver / programmable IO control Device driver
    2. run SODOTH-00445800-US.EXE (Sony Notebook control device driver)
    3. run SODSPI-00445700-US.EXE (Sony® Programmable I/O Control Device Driver Utility)
    4. run SOASSL-00598801-US.EXE (Sony shared library)
    5. run SOAVES-01205105-US.EXE (Sony Event Service)

Very strange. I think it would the best to show Sony that their customers want Vista Drivers very bad :D

Hell, I want to get this thing working

Best thing would probably to express this all via Sony e-Support and their official Forums on http://www.club-vaio.com

If you install any Sony utilities after the Event Service, then the Fn key will stop working.
Uninstall the Event Service package (in the control panel: uninstall software) then re-install the Event Service.
    Then try again.

I've done it heaps of time, always got the Fn key to work

Just reboot when it says to. no need to run those programs in compatibility mode. just click on "this program run correctly" or something like that

I uninstalled Vaio Event, and then re-install, still not working. The brightness bar isn't moving.

    ???

I gave you the order and the name of each package to run.

What *utilities* are you talking about?

Note, that I installed it on another machine, and only those 3 were required:
run SODSPI-00445700-US.EXE (Sony® Programmable I/O Control Device Driver Utility)
    run SOASSL-00598801-US.EXE (Sony shared library)
    run SOAVES-01205105-US.EXE (Sony Event Service)

    and in this order !

I have a question, when you say to "run" these EXE programs where do I run them from? Windows Update downloaded and installed th Sony notebook control device driver and the Programmable I/O Control device driver utility, do I have to run theme from somewhere also?
Where do I get the Sony Shared library from?
    I appreciate your help.

There are 2 modes in SZ notebook. the switch on the lesft, besides "wireless"
you will see a "Stamina" and "Speed".Turn the switch to Stamina.

    Stamina = power saving mode
    Speed = performance mode

    Is this for real?
You get them on the Sony Vaio support web site, Where you get all the different software packages and updates for your Vaio SZ.

Now what I mentioned was what's found on the US web site.

As to how to run the program, it's rather complicated if you've never used a PC before.

Basically you open File Explorer, go into the folder where the file is stored and you double click on it to run it.

I still can not get the function key to work under Vista RC2. While in stamina mode I installed the Sony Notebook control device driver and the Sony® Programmable I/O Control Device Driver Utility (SODSPI-00445700-US.EXE).Then I installed the Sony Shared Library (SOASSL-00598801-US.EXE) and rebooted when prompted. Then I installed the Sony Event Services (SOAVES-01205105-US.EXE) and was not prompted to reboot so I tried the function key with the brightness key and it still does not work. I then rebooted thinking maybe that would activate it but still a no go.
    Am I doing anything wrong?

I've just managed to get it workin on my FS series (VGN-FS295XP - UK Model) however I needed to use a slightly different version of the event services as the one listed earlier in this thread wouldn't install on my FS model.

I found that ftp://download.sony.com/US/pc/SOAVES-01205105-UN.EXE (note the change in from -US.exe to -UN.exe

I found this by going to http://www.css.ap.sony.com/vaio/vista/General/DownloadByCat.aspx?Category=VAIO Notebook and selecting the highest model number for my series of laptop and then downloading the event service for that model. So if you have another model you may want to try that approach.

you need to be in the mode with the intel video card, not the nvidia.

and as to what to install and in which order refer to an earlier post of mine

I installed Vista Build 5744 on my SZ360 last night. I followed the instructions in this forum to get the FN keys working. They only work in Stamina Mode, of course.

I was able to get the Memory Stick slot and fingerprint reader working as well. The QPEK software doesn't overlay with the Vista login as it does in XP. I'm sure that will be resolved with a future upgrade.

Device Manager currently shows one "Unknown Device" that it can't configure. That's probably the camera. I will work on that next.

Does this experience match up with most of the other SZ owners?

I've updated Vista to the official public release. And this time I can't get the Fn button working. Everybody got it to work with the official Vista?

I followed exactly the same procedure as last time: no luck
