I just finished installing Vista/Office 2007 back on to my SZ. Got everything to work, except for the fingerprint reading software. I figured there were too many differences to take a chance on the login software not being changed. Gonna wait on that software to be Vista compliant.

I emailed the vendor of the ProtectorSuite who was very helpful, but basically said that because Sony have "tweaked" the installer we'd have to wait for Sony to ship an updated driver/app. They did say that their core software is happy on vista thou.

I've just ordered an update CD (Vista) for my TX3 (which uses the same device/software) so I'm hoping it'll be on that. Also the new SZs ship with Vista so one must assume the drivers etc will be posted soon. I only get an audio driver on the vista downloads page at the moment.

I installed Vista Ultimate. Vista found everything except 4 or 5 devices. Two of those found the drivers when I told Vista to search the internet for drivers, and the remaining devices accepted the XP drivers.

I used the XP drivers. I followed the sequence in the clean install document by Sony for installing the apps/services.

I did the install of Vista, followed by some windows updates then the stuff detailed in the XP clean install guide...

I can only get the brightness hotkeys to work in Stamina Mode (although I have yet to try an updated Nvidia Driver). The Speed/Stamina button works.
S1 & S2 works also with CPU SOund "reduction". HDD Drive Protection works. Can't get the camera to work.

Also the Wireless LAN Switcher doesn't install properly so I can't turn off bluetooth.

The Volumne hotkeys dont work - it adds VAIO Event Service as a device in the sound mixer, and simply moves that up and down, with no effect on the Master Volume :(

The Alps Pointing device needed an update I got of the web but works fine now.

Hope this helps, if anyone has tips for the stuff i can't get working... :) Why can't Sony get it together and put the updates on thier site already!!

Whats the trick to getting the updated Nvidia drivers to work? Everytime I download them for my card, when it comes time to install them, it tells me that I don't have a supported card.

What version do you need / want? The version I have installed is:
    Dated 8/22/06
    Version 7.15.10.9746

To install it, I went into Control Panel --> Device Manager --> Display adapters.

Then I right-clicked on the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400, and selected "Update driver software...". Then I chose "Search automatically...." and Vista found updated drivers.

I'm not sure that gets you what you want though...

So guys, could somebody with a few days experience of Vista on their SZ please post up a short list of what is / isn't working?

I have an opportunity to install a legit Business copy of Vista, but want to make sure all the important things are working (important to me being volume control, brightness control and other power saving facilities). Also, is it possible to use the Vaio Recovery software to go back to XP Pro if it all falls apart??

    Thanks :)

Nm, I figured it out and got it working. My only problems are...

    1) Can't dim monitor with FN key

    2) Bluetooth driver

    3) Built in video camera

    4) Mcafee Antivirus

My camera works: I installed the drivers from the Sony support site.

I am using the free AVG antivirus, it seems pretty stable. Google "avg free" to find it.

Yes, version 8.5 will work, but it is also the enterprise edition. If you were to obtain a legit copy, it would cost $$$. The standard home user version does not work. I tried installing it twice on two fresh installs, and it BSOD the machine.

My final thoughts is to wait for Sony to release all official drivers. There is still too many problems with Vista for me to upgrade since I rely on it for work. I sure as hell can't wait though! I was amazed at how smooth it ran with just 1GB of ram.

Not sure if this has already been said, but it would appear that Vista SZ drivers are available on the European download site.

They didn't appear when I was looking for drivers for my SZ2, but when I looked under the SZ3, a new category appears for Vista.

    Direct Link:

    http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/select/select.asp?l=en&category=-1&serie=-1&m=2377

If the above link doesn't work, try going to vaio-link.com. You have to enter a serial number to be allowed access.

I wont receive my copy of Vista for around 5 days, so I can't try them out! However, if it seems that they work okay and say US customers can't get onto the European download site, I could host them....

Yea I know, sorry about the 404! I only had time to put the drivers up this morning while on my Uni's fast connection.

Now I'm back at halls of residence and it's as slow as dial-up here.... I'll try and do it on Monday.

Swiss it would appear that the files you got are for XP and not for Vista. Under Vista there's only Audio available, and the preinstalled drivers/utilities are under the XP section.

i've been to the europe link posted here, and the drivers unfortunately are only for xp. they do have vista drivers up, but at present, all that's listed are audio drivers.

i too am waiting for the SZ vista drivers. i have vista installed on 7/8 of the computers in my home, ultimate is waiting to go on my SZ, but i won't part with the fingerprint scanner until i know i can get it to work in vista. the fingerprint scanner works flawlessly for me, and has quickly become one of my favourite features of the SZ.
