The SR XP drivers and utilities are located here, and they should be installed in the order they're numbered. You may want to skip installing the Battery Checker utility, though, and see if everything functions properly, since that has always been pretty useless for previous VAIO models.

I completely forgot about this topic! I shrunk my partition to a 20GB and will try out XP soon. Stay tuned!

    Edit: BSOD on setup, 0x7B.

Did you remember to slipstream the SATA drivers for the hard drive?

That's probably it, but I really don't know which drivers to download. Is there a universal SATA driver that I can use, or does each hard drive have their own specific SATA driver?

Yes, I'd be curious to know if the FTP link here has everything needed to do a successful downgrade.

Also, have you tried following the guide here on creating an awesome windows XP installation disk with the latest service pack and all drivers for an unattended install? Seems worth a try when combined with the files offered by the FTP.

If you are getting an SR with Vista Business on it, it will either have a downgrade disk in the box, or it will have a flyer that will tell you where you can order one for free from Sony.

Also, Sony will have a few models available from places that have already been pre-downgraded to XPPro for you with a Vista disk in the box.

Well, I'm looking to get a definite answer because once I get the laptop and the school year starts (or vice versa), I'll get settled in, start doing stuff on it, and it'd be very inconvenient to install a new OS.

Sorry to be double posting like mad, but I called Sony Customer Support today, and asked "Does the SR get better battery life under XP or Vista" and they said it's pretty much the same. Should I take them at their word?

You're asking people to do the same [inconvenient] thing. Not to be rude, but are you really expecting something surprising as far as XP performance? Your best bet is that it'll be a little better than Vista, although I will say that when I did have XP on my SR it had a dramatically quicker start-up time.

Well, you guys are 10x more computer saavy than I am, by the looks of it, at least laptop wise. I know my way around a desktop but... this is gonna be my first laptop so if I mess anything up I'm dead.

My main concern is battery life actually - perf I know XP tends to be better, but BATTERY LIFE has conflicting reports, both here on NBR and on the internet, so that's why I'm asking specifically for this model.

This is in contrary to almost everything I have read.

I'm asking for actual experiences, dude - I've read plenty of stuff on the internet, most of which seems to suggest XP gives better battery life, but there have been several exceptions, and especially since now Vista's a bit more 'mature', I'm asking to be sure.

I had a dell Inspiron 8600 notebook originally with XP, I update to vista 2-3 years ago and it yield the same battery life (2:30 mins ish due to the aging battery). At least I did not feel any difference, anyways that's my outdated experience and hopefuly that help :p
