Apologies if this is a re-post, but I just found this today:

    Windows® 8 Upgrade Instructions for VAIO® PCs

And, after checking to see if my laptop was supported, I was happy to discover:

"Congratulations! The VPCSE16FX/S is supported for Windows® 8."

Is anyone planning on upgrading to WIN8? I'm definitely interested, but would like to play with it on a non-touch laptop first, as I haven't messed around with a release preview.

The VPCZ1**** is not supported for Windows 8.

Sony will not provide any support or drivers for installation of Windows 8 on this model.

    Thanks a lot, SONY.

^ it's asking for the purchase date of the F2390X. i just said July 1, 2011 (given that it has Sandy Bridge + Fermi), and it said "Congratulations! The VPCF2390X is supported for Windows® 8."...so you're good to go :)

I'm already using Windows 8 Release Preview, and everything works, except the SD card reader is a little buggy. That is probably already fixed in the RTM version, and, if not, should be fixed before the official launch. Otherwise, the Windows 7 drivers work just fine, (even on my VPCZ1, which SONY has washed their hands of), although some of them have to be installed in compatibility mode (great compatibility modes in Windows 8, btw.), sometimes with admin privileges. You can read my thread on the topic for tips - it is for the release preview, but the tips are still valid AFAIK.

I'm disgusted by this. Obviously they'll be some workarounds, but not to provide official drivers for a machine that cost £2000 barely 2 years ago stinks.

I've purchased around 10 VAIO laptops over the years but they just don't give a toss about their customers. I'm annoyed about the lack of Windows 8 support, but I am also annoyed at the lack of driver updates for my VAIO's over the years, particularly with my VPC-Z.

I really can't see myself purchasing any further laptops from Sony. They are getting left behind anyway. Samsung seem to be innovating in many areas Sony used to excel in and Apple are so far ahead when it comes to design it's embarrassing.

Sony just don't give a damn about supporting their existing users so I will probably have to vote with my wallet and shopping elsewhere.

The Z can't be upgraded because Win 8 has some issues with the PMD. I don't think it's a Sony problem, it's in Microsoft's court.

I'm not sure I want to upgrade, I'm not a fan of the hidden menus and gestures. If they work well with the touchpad I'll try it.

Using the Windows 8 Preview in my laptop, and I would say the system is way speedy than Win 7,
only thing you give up is the Aero appearance, and there is no start button on the taskbar,
but I don't think this is a problem at all.
If you install it with SSD and UEFI boot, the computer just like flying :)

The SVZ13XXX series shows up as eligible.

Just looks to me like typical Sony. Only do what you have too. Really sad from a company less than 10 years ago that was the pinnacle in many electronic areas.

    Look... "Its a Sony"

You can get the aero by selecting the aero theme.
There is a hack that will give you back the start menu if you really can't live without it.
