On my sony s170 every time i remove the power cord, the wireless will disconnect and then connect again and sometmes i must log off for it to get signal again. Any one else haveing the same issues? I have a pcmica netgear wg511t card, not the built in intel one.

I believe the reason you're loosing connection is because the PCMCIA slot if not providing enough power to the card when on battery. It's also possible that power management is kicking in for the slots. You can try checking the Device Manager for the PCMCIA slots, and see if you can disable an power management features (don't know if they'll have any, but worth a check). I read something similar from a different user on a different notebook brand. Using a Linksys WiFi PCMCIA card while on battery will cause the connection to disconnect. I don't think they every found a solution.
