We wanted a dual band adapter in our Vaio SVE151190X, so I removed the Atheros and installed an Intel Centrino Ultimate 6300. Adapter and driver installation was successful, I left the 3rd antenna connector unhooked for now (might investigate in how to install a 3rd antenna some time later).
The problem now is, the Intel driver software claims wireless is turned Off, regardless of what the Vaio Smart Network Utility shows. So I uninstalled this utility, suspecting some sort of incompatibility with the Intel driver. After restart the Wireless light would now be permanently On just as expected, but the Intel driver keeps reporting that Wireless is turned Off, and Windows Mobility Center confirms this. But, here the button "Turn wireless on" is greyed out. I fail to understand why Windows says Wireless is Off, and cannot be turned On, while the hardware status is On? (I then re-installed the Smart Network Utility but that didn't change anything)
Thanks for any suggestion you guys may have!

The 6300 wouldn't happen to be a Lenovo or HP part would it? Lenovo wifi adapters won't work on non-Lenovos and I believe the same is true for HP but I'm not sure about that.

Not that I know about. And basically the adapter and driver work, showing up in the Device Manager like they are supposed to. The issue is with the wireless control of the laptop, with the Vaio software so tied in with Windows that it's not clear to me what is going on.
Someone basically did the same thing here sony vaio wireless adapter card install - YouTube so I asked the same question.
Wireless status after adapter swap
