Ok, so in my settings, I have the lid close action set to 'Do Nothing'. But, when open up the lid, the speed of things I had been downloading at full speed are down to 0 kb/s, but quickly start downloading again after the lid is open. Is it supposed to do this? How do I change it?

have u checked if the computer is set to sleep after a few minutes? im guessing because my gf sony wakes up after opening the lid, so u woundnt notice the change, unless u have password in the account.

Have yall checked the network driver priority settings for Power Management?

To do this, simply do the following:

    1) Right click My Computer
    2) Select Properties
    3) Click on the Hardware tab or link
    4) Click the Device Manager button
    5) Scroll down to the Network or Communication Section
    6) Click to expand the list
    7) Right Click the wireless card listed
    8) Select Properties
    9) In the new window that opens select Power Management
    10) Uncheck "Allow this computer to turn off this device to save power"
    11) Click Apply or OK and close out other windows and check to see if that fixes the problem

All computers come with there network drivers default with this setting on. If you leave the computer idle for a while, it may decide to turn the network driver off temporarily. This happens more often than not with notebooks versus desktops. Obviously, if the network driver "turns off" or essentially goes to sleep, then you won't have connectivity and the internet.

I have a Sony Vaio FW-FW41M with this exact problem, and it's an Intel Wireless Card! Is this just a bug with the FW series? That's really weak by Sony. I tried what BBGus suggested but it didn't work for me.
Very annoying, nothing we can do?
