Get on the web and type in your model and size of hard drive you want. There are sites that will tell you what will work.

No is correct for the TZ, but the TT uses SATA, so I'd say there is a high likelihood of it working. The 250GB version of this drive is used on the high-end TTs.

Thanks everyone. Yes, my understanding is that TT uses SATA.

I've done pretty extensive search on the web but came up with no instruction on how to open up the TT and swap the drive. I search various permutations of words such as "TT, hard drive, HD, upgrade, replacing, opening" but no results.

Anyone know of an instructional link?

    Thanks,
    UL

ps: I'm reading that some think that the TZ is much better built than the TT which worries me a bit but that's a different thread. I like the TT hdmi out and Sata drive potential. Also supposed to have a significantly more vibrant screen per one website with a photo showing both compared.

This is the best that there is-
Put it through google if you need to translate it.
    http://kunkoku.livedoor.biz/archives/51534770.html

The TT uses a microSata HD as i mentioned in your other post. This will work in the TT and not in the TZ that uses a zif drive. May be you can use it in the TZ's bay where the optical goes if there is some convertor out there but that is kind of pointless seeing as you can get faster mechancial HD's.

The TT series is offered with a 320GB HD in the EU now.

Rachel. Thanks. I'll look at that link.

    What a great forum.

    Thanks everyone.

I never saw a TZ 'in the flesh' so can't compare. I do have a TX and compared to that, my TT is VERY well built -the fit and finish is superb, the chassis feels tight and firm, and the keyboard is perhaps one of the best I've had on a laptop. Some have suggested the spongy chrome hinge covers let it down and give a feel of lower quality, however I think this is deliberate good engineering designed to absorb the mechanical stresses from the power button and AC adapter socket. Nice kit.

Not all TT's are spec'd with HDMI (sad omission since there are laptops the third of the price of the TT that do have HDMI).

The TT screen is 'Wide Gamut' with very good reserve brightness. After the TX, I initially perceived it as being way over-saturated but after a week or so my brain's 'neural pathways' adjusted and I very much appreciate the greater range of colours it can display. It brought a lot of my photo collection 'alive' and watching DVD/HD video (esp BluRay) is superb. To the eye of say a professional photographer, it probably still appears over-saturated but I'm very happy with it. Going back to the TX display now looks overly blue and 'flat' by comparison.

    Thanks for the review.

The HDMI comment is not good.... :) I thought ALL TT's have HDMI out. Unit arriving friday and it does not list HDMI but I thought that was an oversight. HDMI was an important factor.

    Sigh!

Not all is lost. Rachel will be able to fill you in with her experience in having HDMI fitted after purchase.

May be it was an oversight, ultralight what is the model number of the laptop you bought?

You can add the HDMI in and as Kendallj stated if that is what you want to do i can try and help on that.

I hope you like your new laptop.

Thanks Rachel. Don't have it off the top of my head.

Crazy thing is we have two new TZ sitting here. One for my dad and I fired it up - thinking how flimsy the whole thing felt compared to those magnesium or aluminum unibody laptops.... :) So now considering whether to really get the 3 year no fault accidental coverage warranty. I'm worried that it will be damaged just being packed in a roller case when he travels around the world.

Rachel, I'm sending you a PM. TT arrived today. Like the design a bit more than the TZ.

It does have the HDMI port so i assume that HDMI works. HOORAY!!

Hi Rachel - Would you explain adding the HDMI if you don't mind? I have an FW590 but I'm curious as to how it is done. Also you wouldn't happen to know how to get S-Video out from these laptops do you?

    Thank You

    ultralight i'm glad you're pleased.

Haroldt, i'm sorry i cannot help about the S video. About the HDMI, i know this works for the TT series. I don't know about any other models. Sony equipped some models with a built in modem as opposed to the built in HDMI that most models do come with. With the TT it is just a case of getting those parts and switching them. You can get them from Sony direct or may be from Ebay from time to time.
This might work with other Sony models, but unless it is confirmed we don't really know.

Thanks. Very happy to say this unit came with the HDMI. And thanks for your PM advice. VERY helpful.

I tried doing a recovery using either F8 or F10 from boot up. The weird thing is that it recovered back in XP and not Vista as I would expect. I had assumed that the TT came with native Vista in the hidden partition rather than XP.

Thanks again for all the help!!

My TT certainly had Vista for it's recovery OS, although now long gone once I made a set of recovery DVD's then extracted the Apps and Drivers from them.

Ok, so anyone knows why when I recover from the HD at boot up, it's XP and not Vista?

    Thanks,

ultalight you can overwrite the recovery partition with XP. It happened to me with another Sony laptop. I cannot remember what i selected now.
Have you tried to order your W7 upgrade discs from Sony?

I did not know I could order Win 7 for the TT. I thought Sony stopped at Vista for the TT. I'll have to call them to ask.

    Thanks,

You don't need to call them. You might be able to purchase the discs, it is worth trying anyway.
Just fill in your details here and put in your purchase date etc. Because you purchased it recently you might possibly be able to.
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/os7upgrade.pl

I installed W7 with my own retail discs that i bought. May be this is another option for you.

    Edited to add:
I checked and it does not look like you can get the dics. If you do call them let us know what they say. Installing with your own retail discs would probably be the most simple thing to do.

If you wanted the Vista install discs which your model did come with then i would call the spare parts divsion for that.
