Hi, for my older brother's birthday gift, I'm considering buying him a Sony FZ with the highest configs..T7500 processsor, 8400m gt vid card, blu-ray drive, 15 inch display, with a glossy screen.

Is this computer a great computer to buy? Should I buy it now? Or wait for lenovo's T61P to come out?\

Also, how long will this computer last now-adays? Because, my old sony vaio lasted me for 7 years, and I'm not sure about the new computers. So help needed.lol

Both are excellent machines in different ways.

FZ is a stylish, multimedia, entertainment notebook with perhaps the best LCD screen in the world. It's indeed a great computer to buy as a gift and the blu-ray drive will future-proof your computer. High def drives will become an integral part of notebooks in the months to come. So having one now will make sure your machine doesn't get outdated in the near future.
Vaios still last long provided you take care of the thing properly.

Lenovo machines are basically business machines which are more robust and sturdy than the FZ, but looks old-fashioned. They won't look glamorous like the FZ or have its multimedia features, but can handle abuse and rough use better and also have better security features.

You can decide which one to gift depending on what use your brother will have with it.

In the owner's thread a few people are complaining of a high pitched sound coming from some FZ190s as well as occasional problems with the CD/DVD and blueray drives. Perhaps waiting a few weeks to see how these issues work out could aid in your decision making.

Are the problems with those FZ190s the ones with Blu-Ray drives with santa rosa technology and has the 8400m gt?

Just FYI... I heard the 200gb HD is only 4200rpm, while the 160gb and below HDs are 5400rpm (faster). So I'd get a 160gb or smaller drive for better performance. That's assuming you're customizing though.

There are ones 200gb with 7200rpm, or 250gb with 5400rpm.

You can easily swap the 200GB drive with one of your choice after you get your computer. Just make sure you make the recovery discs before you do that. Then use the disks to install the OS and softwares onto the new drive.

If he is going to be playing a lot of games, then you probably want to look elsewhere. The 8400M GT isn't going to last that long. A 8600M GT would do you well.

From what I've been reading the noise is in the ones with the X3100 not the 8400s. It's a motherboard issue they think.
