    Hi there,

I'm almost close to my first Vaio purchase but I'm divided between 2 different model.

I'm looking at the Sony Vaio FE21H which comes with X-Black LCD with double lamp technology and the Sony Vaio FE21B which comes with the first gen X-Black LCD I think. Of course the FE21B which is the cheaper one doesn't have Bluetooth, smaller HD capacity and no Motion Eye Camera, which I'm pretty much OK with.

    [IMG] VS [IMG]

Question is, is the X-Black LCD with double lamp technology worth the 100 pounds difference? How noticeable is it from the first gen of X-Black from the second gen? Also I've been hearing XBRITE, Clear Screen with dual lamp...what are the difference??

Also can anyone else spot the difference between these 2 models?

    Thanks in advance.

GO look at the demo on the link you sent. It shows a "simulation" of the difference. The SZ with the LED back light is the same as the FE models lcd screen if I remember right. So I would buy the better screen model in a heartbeat.

I didn't know Sony actually produced the FE with two different displays..

Well I would definitely go for the FE21H. The dual lamp display is noticeably better then the "normal" display, its much brighter and more even lighting. Plus you get the bigger harddrive and Bluetooth. In my opinion that's definitely worth the 100 Pounds.

The SZ with LED display and FE with LCD aren't comparable, it's two totally different technologies.

Thanks for that guys, now I'm certain i'll get the dual lamp technology thing. Now I am looking at the Malaysia Sonystyle (I'm from Malaysia, but working in the UK Now)...the FE series have this " 15.4" Wide (WXGA: 1280 x 800) TFT colour display (Clear Bright High Colour LCD: Dual Lamp Wide View)"...is it the same or different???

Has anyone seen the two screens? I thought the FE11 and FE21 screens were the same.

Are there any problems with the first generation X-Black or is this another money making scam?

If the difference is not noticeable then surely there is no point in spending money on it?

Clear Bright LCD is the name for XBRITE/XBLACK Sony screens in the asia/pacific region.

Rad - The double lamped screen will be brighter.

But will it be a significant improvement over the older one? I thought X-Black was good enough.

I have a FE-21B and I didn't know that my Vaio has only one lamp. I sold several FE-21M and FE-11H and the display was incredible, but mines has very poor angle and from sides I get shadows in the opposite side of the display.

I was going to change the laptop with ones like mine, but after reading that I think I will change model (Vaio FE-21M or Asus A6JC-Q009H)

I bought a fe-21b vaio from sony one month ago but was never happy with the display. It works fine for surfing and office work. But if you like me work with images and video, perhaps ony wants to watch a movie in fullscreen the fe-21b with first generation x-black is horrible. My friend bought the fe-21m (next generation xblack.. with red stripe) so I could compare them both. The difference i HUGE!!!! The main problems with first generation is the viewing angle which is close to 0 (I'm not joking). The screen is brighter in the bottom than the top. Moving your head while watching it makes the light and colors change differently all over the screen. The light is not even over the screen, more like a half moon. Black is not black, more like gray. Light colors are fine but when they become darker and almost black ghosting effects appear even if the viewer is in absolut center of the screen.

Therefore I returned it to the store and got the fe-21m instead (next generation with dual-lamp) which is just absolutly brilliant. I can sit and watch it for hours.... it's just that good :) Viewing angle is perfect, not 180, but realy good. Moving the head around wont change colors or lighting.

Therefore I would not recommend anyone to buy a sony vaio with first generation x-black (unless you don't care at all... but then why get a vaio?)... I don't even know why they still produce laptops with that screen... it's just not good enough for a vaio. If I'm not wrong the new fe31 and 41 H also use it and the new colorfull C-series (but I could be wrong).

But I could really recommend anyone to get a vaio with dual lamp, they are amazing and vaios are really well build laptops.

Hope this is usefull to someone.

So "double lamp" = LED backlit on SZ Premiums?
