I am confused with different types of monitors that Sony use. They offer XBrite Duraview, XBrite HiColor and X-Black Double Lamp. What is the different between them and which one is best for watching DVD and general use?

Hi colour and double lamp are the same, just different naming scheme from different regions.

Duraview is a new type of screen that sony uses with a scratch proof coating on the screen surface.

    Hope this helps,
    Johnny T

OK, I take it that Duraview means durable view or something. But how about the picture quality difference between HiColor and Duraview? Are they the same?

I don't think we know a whole lot about Duraview yet.

HiColor uses double lamp as well, and I don't really know if there is a difference between HiColor and XBlack. I'm thinking they're the same thing.

Double lamp is only available on FW series..

HiColor is available on many series.

    Duraview means scratch resistant.

Are there any screens that offers cmfortable work outside ? Since old x-blacks use to reflect a lot on the sun...just like the rest of the screens.

Look for rugged notebooks. Rugged notebooks are designed for outdoor use, eg construction or police works and the screen is designed to compensate with the sunlight. Panasonic make rugged notebooks but several other manufacturers make them too. Just google rugged notebooks.

Most LEDs: Sony TZ, SZ, Macbook Air I've tested outside all work well.

Since we are talking about screen technologies here, I have a few quick questions.

What is the difference between the xbrite-eco and the hi-colour? Are they just backlighting technologies? Why is the hi-colour supposedly sooo much better than anything else and is the LCD panel the same regardless of which option is chosen?

... or get something like the Toshiba R500 which uses a transflective display, so actually gets clearer the brighter the sunlight (like most modern colour mobile phone displays). Of course the downside of the R500 is that it feels very fragile because it's so light and thin.

I can't really explain the difference maybe someone else can.

I have a different suggestion. Go to a store and compare the eco screens with the high colour screens. Big difference in vibrance and contrast in my opinion.

Or check the reviews at www.notebookcheck.com or www.notebookjournal.de
They measure actual brightness and contrast with professional equipment.

R500 has improved a lot in display quality, but as far as I know it's not coming close to the TZ super screen. Here's the measured brightness.
