    By using those style customization programs/packs it will degrade your system performance a decent amount.

    most of these screens are made in 16 color palette, so unless you are a gamer, the performance hit which is extremely small should be negilible

    There is a big theming thread by Aero that used to be a sticky in the software section :)

    As for resource use, minimum 1gb ram. I run StyleXP with a black vista style skin. But I have the process turned off as I have no need for boot or logon skinning.

    To say it will "degrade your system performance a decent amount" is a little generalist. Depends what you run. I have 5 yahoo widget engine processes running and that uses <50mb... so really effect is minimal. In fact I leave the engine on for gaming and notice no slowdown in F.E.A.R! And as I said, I don't have stylexp running in the background, so I get a better look with no effect on system running

    It will degrade performance it just matters if the program/pack is buggy or not. There are some quality ones out there that won't really make a big impact, but then again there are others that will just watch out.
