Why does my XP Pro 64 bit edition still only see 3 out of 4 GB of RAM that I have installed in my SZ381P laptop? Granted, the BIOS also sees 3GB (3,219,181,568 to be exact). But I have 64 bit CPU (Core 2 DUO, 2.16GHz T7400), so the BIOS should not map memory address space close to 4GB for the hardware.

According to the memory map from the 64 bit XP Pro (see 2nd attachment), this 64 bit OS acts just like a 32 bit OS because the highest address space reserved for hardware is also 4GB.

    The current SZ 4GB situation:

    - 64bit Processor [Yes]
    - 4GB Ram [Yes]
    - Windows 64bit (XP 64/Vista 64) [Yes]
    - Should see close to 4GB [No]

    Reason for failure:

    - BIOS does not support 4GB

Why did Sony intentionally crippled the BIOS? They already crippled the RAM bus speed to 667 MHz, instead of 533 Mhz. I wonder what else that Sony cripple in the BIOS.

They have also disabled VT. Not sure why, but Sony have disabled a lot of features for no appearent reason but to annoy, p-off its customers.

    Hello,

BIOS shows 3gb instead of 4gb on my SZ6 too. However, my Vista x64 shows (and uses) all of the 4gb !! I don't understand that. Do you ?

It's the processor that is not allowing 4GB. The 381 has the 945 platform which recognizes up to 3GB while the 965(600 series) sees the full 4GB.
