Myself, my dad, and my brother pitched in to buy my mom this Sony SR laptop on ebay. She had wanted a laptop for years but could never justify the price, but didn't mind buying used if it had a scratch or anything.

So I buy this pink one on eBay thinking the price and the model is exactly what she would have bought if she could afford it. She loves mine.

I buy off eBay all the time, almost over 300 transactions, very rare have I had a problem. Hell, the laptop I'm typing on right now I got off ebay without a hitch...

Well low and behold, I get it today, the day before Xmas......chipped / scuffed to hell......so I'm thinking in a Homer Simpson voice "It's just a little dirty; its still good - its still good"

then I open it up and turn it on....LCD screen is broken (even though it was pictured working in the listing...)

This sucks; Paypal has got my money back in the past from these crooks, but this just completely sucks the big one right now. 5am, am I supposed to do, its ****ing Xmas eve now....****!

That sucks. Is there anything open in your area? If you have a BestBuy, or something similar you may be able to salvage XMas yet.

Just tell your mum what happened (that old saying 'its the thought that counts'). She knows what she is going to get soon and remember its not your fault.

prices here in canada are nuts. $700 will get her a POS Toshiba or something, grand for a CS (or CR, I forget, C something)

last time i checked an SR was like $1400 + our lovely 14% sales tax....

right now best option is order a new one from sony for 900, but that still doesnt get me out of this situation with the seller....paypal will guarantee me $200 but the other $500 I paid is in limbo; what confuses me so much about this is that the seller has a perfect rating and sold like 20 things this year no issues...

His feedback looks perfect. Have you tried contacting him? If so what did he say?

well its 5am, im sure ill find out later

ive already filed all the paypal stuff.....no way this was accidental. the external damage is all over the thing (scuffs, small nicks and scratches, etc.) and a dent to the power button. the inside also has some small marks and the stickers are all scratched up, consistant look with the rest, plus the screen has all thees marks on it.....and is cracked

it just looks too bad for a shipping mess up. i dunno....

Did you have paypal take the money directly out of your checking acct or did you use a credit card? Paypals buyer protection is a JOKE, and I learned my lesson in a similar situation to yours. It's funny because paypal will give a warning everytime you try to buy something with a credit card, but I think it is because companies like Visa, Amex, Mastercard will put their feet to the fire and WILL get your money back if you are defrauded.... really, for anything over $50US I will pay with my credit card through paypal for the protection. In my situation I purchased a laptop from a buyer with multiple good reviews and never recieved it (scam). I called paypal but they stated they could only help me if the buyer had money in their paypal account. I was upset to say the least (spent $1200 on that laptop). I then called my credit card company and had the money back on my credit card the next day.

    paid with AMEX

from what i understand amex is good with buyer protection and insurance/warranty

speaking of ebay, I bought an FW in the summer from a guy with 100% feedback, who sold tons of laptops that month and never had a bad word about him.

I got the laptop.....it was packed in nothing, just throw into a box. needless to say it arrived with parts hanging off it and was pretty scuffed. i tell the seller, he tells me to call him.....and then he yells AT ME on the phone. what a psycho. but long story short, paypal got the money back for me (this one was paypal balance, not CC)

Calm down. You never know with ebay. I've been there myself with a camera lens and Paybal was not helpful. I used my GOLD MASTER and I have purchase protection on it. Both ebay and paypal refused to help so I contacted Mastercard. They gave me the money back. Considering I pay 77 euros monthly for those benefits...they'd better :p.

I'm glad you got your money back. Yeah complete misrepresentation compared to the auction posting. Everything looks legit and good in terms of feedback and such. Sucks that it didn't work out in terms of the present-giving.

I wouldn't trust ebay for a laptop, when my FW came from soy, the box was massive, and the thing was packed so securely nothing could or would move. most people on ebay think they can pack a laptop, but in reality they can't, since there are many stress points on a laptop that can't have weight on them or even moving around.

btw what did he ship it with? and how did it arrive? canada post? purolator? fedex? ups?

not sure, my bro picked it up and chucked the box.

when i ship laptops i use Fedex....they have a special box just for laptops so they dont get damaged in transit

You can file a Significant Not As Described claim with Paypal.
Paypal now they usually hold seller's money until their buyers leave pos. feedback or after 21 days. Sellers with low feedback score are likely to be hold their money when they receive the payments.
Anyway, you have to send it back to get full refund, but you also have to pay for the shipment.
