Gotta love EMS packages from Japan :)

I won't have time to configure or really play with it until Sunday but as soona s I can, I'll report back. I'll also compare it to the G1 I currently have.

    Congrats man! :)

I tell you, I been to Sony store and I saw next to the TZ the G series. Well, I have to say I'm impressed with the G. Very nice lappy really, I'm quite considering again the purchasing of the TZ. In pictures seems more ugly than it really is.
The G2 has Core 2 Duo and 64 GB SSD no?

The one I got does have the C2D and the 64GB SSD. You can get it in other flavors, but that's what I wanted.

I really like the G1 and anticipate the G2 will not disappoint.

Yeah, these specs I'm interested too. The battery I doubt that is going to be 11hours as Sony claims (but must be more than the standard one of the TZ).
Fender, do you have any links for reviews of the G2? In Conics they have a choice of three kind of flash drive 32/48/64 GB (that's great), and furthermore gives the choice of choosing external DVD drive or DVD burner...This DVD burner is an integrated optical drice? Also do you know if has the WWAN built-in?

I'd love to see your insight on the difference between the G1 and G2, enjoy your pricy purchase! :D

And yes, you can get the G with or without the integrated optical drive.

what is better about the g2 than the tz? I'm trying to figure out why you'd get a g over a tz?

Me too I was thinking exactly like you....before I saw the G2 ina shop! :)

It's really very pretty...the TZ appear quite big in confront of it! The screen is 12'' and the resolution is also different, the G is not widescreen. The battery last more than the TZ from what I read around. The specs are very similar so why not consider it also?

I personally would get the TZ by a longshot, but the G is even lighter than the TZ and better built, I think it has a spill proof keyboard?

You have a point there. Well, some people prefer the matte screen than the wide one. But, the next refresh of the TZ will blow off the G series :D

Just kidding...the G is also a great machine to have, is even less heavy than the TZ!

Edit: Why do you say that is better built the G rahul?

The G is built more like the Panasonic Toughbooks and is more marketed towards the business crowd. SOny has the whole demo of it withstanding certain amounts of force, etc. But I can tell you from owning the G1 it is built way better than the T or SZ series. In fact, best built notebook I've owned to date. By now most of my notebooks start to exhibit serious flaws and I've probably gone through a keyboard (not really kidding).

I'm not testing if the keyboard is spill proof, but yes, it can survive some water getting in there. Just don't dump a bottle of water probably lol

The TZ and G despite similar specs are for two different crowds. And personally, I don't like the TZ's resolution (which I've said over and over again), so until the TZ goes 1280x800, no dice.

Well, on my G1 with tweaking brightness and a few settings I can easily get between 7 and 10 hours of use.

No WWAN option - which is kinda surprising for a business notebook but the Japanese WWAN wouldn't work in the US anyway. I use my Cingular PCMCIA card with the G1 and will with the G2.

Both of my Gs have the DVD drive. I realized it's better to have than not. If you don't get it with the DVD you shave off a little bit of weight and get the i.Link port instead.

Very well said... I also liked the build quality of G2 over TZ. But screen resolution, I perfer TZ's widescreen over G2's 1024x768. Honestly, I would go for IBM x61 if I am in the market for a 12" standard screen. They are as good as G2 if not better in build quality.

    Fender,
Congrats on your new G2, just noticed this thread. Look forward to hearing from you on how you like it.

I would love to hear, in particular, how well it runs on Vista.

I ordered my G2 with XP, but have been waiting for delivery because Dynamism has been having difficulty locking down its English XP image. In fact, they even pulled the XP option for the G2 off of their web site now. So, one option for me is to take one with Vista, which I don't really want to do... But would appreciate hearing how you like your new machine.

psun, I do like the X61, and they're built like tanks -- however, they are noticeably heavier and don't have a built in optical drive.

Well, I just booted it up for the first time Thursday night. It's definitely "snappier" than my G1. The 64GB SSD is definitely faster than the 32GB and with the C2D, it's definitely faster than the Core Solo 1.33. I haven't quantified how much faster, but it's faster.

There is one problem: the image of Vista I got doesn't work properly. A lot of the FN keys aren't working nor some buttons like P or the eject. I'm trying to resolve it right now, but it's not good so far. Only volume is working.

Sony driver issues aside, everything seems fine. I'm not going to do any formal review stuff until I get everything working.

I have a G1 and successfully downgraded it to XP. The machine got 2GB of RAM and still felt sluggish with Vista, definitely had a old machine feel. With XP it just flies and feels like a new machine. We had test machines on more powerful C2D, and Vista still feels sluggish compared to XP.

So a great G2 combination would be with C2D, 2GB RAM, SSD and XP. So while I did predict a G2 would appear, I felt the difference would not be that great and I had a need then.

It would be interesting to see how a G3 would be like, with the more efficient ultramobile optimised 45nm CPU with 128GB SSD within a year ..

Owning a G1 I can tell you the G2 (which really is the G3 ... check Sony Japan's site and while it's called the G2, they label it the 3 on the main website http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/G3/) is faster than the G1. It's not even a question.

My G1 with the SSD (which was the G2 ... Europe never got it) and Vista was snappy. The G2 with 2GB, C2D, Vista, and the 64GB SSD is great.
