I was considering a new mac book pro - but when I say the Z and with the high res screen I decided to go that way - now I am wondering if I made the right decision.
-
Most of my friends either have a Macbook Pro or a normal Macbook, and I have to say, while they're good laptops, they aren't anything special. Why exactly are you rethinking your decision?
-
Nobody needs a $2000 OS.
-
how can you have remorse when you bought a z. Unless your family went dead broke buying it, i cant think of a reason to feel remorse.
Z is about .3 lbs heavier than the air and infinitely more powerful. and its screen is beautiful. -
i am having the same problem as you.. i just ordered my SR190 and gonna see if it i like it.. cause i barely use my BR drive, and the 1600 x 900 resolution makes gaming kind of slow, even with the 9300 GS
-
i have both, the Z replaced a Macbook Air actually for me, but I use as my "main computer" a 17in with a 1900x1200 screen. I loved the air, it was a beautiful machine, but the Z is so much more functional and the screen is better I think.
I am blown away by the quality of the Z, it is my first PC and it is very impressive. Vista isn't too bad itself either... -
I don't think its something to ruminate over too much though. -
Sony > Apple IMHO.
-
sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
Dont regret. You haven't even used it yet.
-
you may have remorse when they accounce the new models within the month....shouldnt have remorse now though, the Z is 10x sicker than any MB/P
-
I have no doubt in my mind that the upcoming MacBook is going to be very slick, but for me, coming from the current black MacBook, the integrated graphics hinders the machine somewhat. I also feel like the bezel around the screen is too big on both the current MacBook and the MacBook Air. While the MacBook Air is amazing to hold and use, it lacks an optical drive, and has only one USB port. I considered waiting for the new MacBook/MBP, but at the end of the day I was tired of waiting and wanted to start enjoying a new laptop. The z has just about everything I was looking for in a laptop. What sealed the deal for me though was the high resolution screen. Apple won't offer more than 1280x800 on a 13" screen. I really love 1600x900 now that I've spent some time with it.
There are two things that I will really miss about the MB, and they are the slot loading drive and the mag-safe power adapter. -
I've also been spoiled by the 1600x900 resolution in the select Z's. I'm hoping more 13" notebooks in the future will use this resolution, or anything more than 1280x800 that 90%+ do use.

good luck with that rahul

Remorse? Why? I worked on a regular Macbook earlier today. Felt clunky and heavy compared to my Z sitting nearby on the same table. The MBP is nicer for its size but only if you can commit to OS X..

As far as I know the MBA is the only notebook they ever gave 5 stars for the display. Brightness was measured 387,5 cd/m² with 666:1 contrast. http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/514/3
Sony Z had a brightness of 276 cd/m², contrast 400:1.
http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/514/3
For comparison, Sony TZ has brightness of 290 cd/m² and contrast of 454:1.
All these 3 screens are excellent notebook screens, better than 90% of the notebook market. But MBA is the brightest and with highest contrast.

I think its one of those questions you can argue over for ever.
Some people said Apple is very much overpriced and Sony less so.
I for my part hate Apple (sorry, strong word, but it is that way) and would never ever buy an Apple product - unless maybe to see how easily it can be destroyed.
In contrast I love Sony as a company - headphones, well I managed to brake a few but then it was heavy usage... and things tend to break fast around me... My old portable CD player still works... Thus I would always recommend the Sony.
Then there is compatebility - Apples work only with Apple products unless you are knowledgeable about computers. Threre is as far as I am aware more Software around for Windows, and for many people its easier to use.
Also, you'll get different associations using a Macbook/Sony Vaio Business Range/Dell/Lenovo laptop.
For example - I use an Omega watch (and plan to do so for 30 or more years, possibly until I die) other people will go with a 10/Pounds/Dollar watch and buy a new one every few months.
Some people will buy an expensive watch, sell it after a few years and buy a new one, others will buy new ones and collect them.
So apart from the question whether you love/hate Apple there is no problem. (I don't beleive there is anything in between)
If you are happy with your Sony Z, keep it and have no regrets.
I would always think more positively about a person when I see them using a non Apple product.
Also, for the average user (non-geek) Windows should be more user friendly. -
I like Windows better just because there're so many things out there you can do with it. I tried out Mac for a little while and my thought was "if i really need to concentrate only on my study (work processing n web surf) then I would get a Mac". It was like being locked in a cage for me while using Mac. On the other hand, I learn so much using a PC.
The rumor about up coming Macbook pro is, however, exciting to me. I placed order on the new Z but IF and only IF the Macbook pro is .THATTTTTTTTTTT much better then I will return the Z and move over to Mac. Macbook is just too cheap looking + little kid's computer to me. -
I agree, the MBA's screen is amazing, but so is the Z's. I never was able to put the MBA at full brightness because to be honest, it was too bright for me to use while traveling on a dimmed airplane or under average use. Don't get me wrong, I love the MBA, I just think the Z has far superior functionality and portability. The MBA is a work of art, and the Z is a workhorse. Its as simple as that to me. -
Wow lots of comments since posting this last night! OK - the Z is at my house so more to report tonight - I have a bunch of work to do on the drive change.
-
I would be impressed with apple laptops if i grew up on a farm and was retarded. I didn't and I'm not... so I bought a sony.
I'm also not impressed with the city of Bruges. -
sony z is great laptop , just be careful with the CTO model, had to exchange my 540 3 times.. to get a good one, my 3rd one , that i am currently using right now have a nosiy F3 key but dont bother me much . so yea.. the 1st one the body was warp and 2nd one noisy hinges ..
-
-
This is bad news for me as well, as I am planning to buy 590 CTO. The Canadian ready made z555 has funny keyboard. Maybe I should reconsider, since z555 has 1600x900 screen. The funny keyboard is used in Europe as well, so, maybe it is ok.

Talking about screens, I saw the Dell E6400 1440*900 LED yesterday. What a poor screen unbelievable. It's very bright but contrast is very low. Photos look not realistic.
If this is any indication for the E4200 and E4300 be warned.
Turns out E4300 in US is more expensive than the Z. In Europe the other way around. -
I've never been impressed with dell screens. I've owned 2 dells and hated the screens and couldn't wait to get rid of them. IBMs aren't much better, but at least they are matte so it doesn't produce all that glare that the dells have.
IMO, Sony has the best lcd screens on the market. -
i have a Z590 and i have no problems with it.. (in terms of build quality)
-
Displays can be subjective and i have said that before. You can take five people and they might all say something about a laptop display. John Ratsey reviewed that Dell notebook and he seemed to like the display.
-
Screens can be subjective. Contrast, brightness and blacklevels can be measured.
Dell E6400 has a contrast of 167:1. Far less than Sony Z, TZ or SZ.
