I don't play many games but I do like to indulge myself with some Civilization IV while flying.

Unfortunately the performance on my Z (2.4ghz, 3gb, 4.4 "rating") is significantly worse than my SZ (can't recall the specs off-hand but had bought it 2.5 years ago and it had a 3.2 "rating").

Anyone else having a similar issue? (Or, even better, did anyone else manage to fix a similar issue?)

What are the graphics cards in each? The GPU plays a significant roll when it comes to games ;)

The full system specifications of both systems would be beneficial in determining the root cause of the poor performance on your system.

A few quick pointers would be to make sure you have all the latest Windows updates and the latest drivers for your system.

    The Z has a p8600 (2.4GHZ), 3 GB & a NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS when in "Speed" mode

The SZ has a T7200 (2.0 GHZ), 2 GB & a NVidia GeForce Go 7400 (128 dedicated) when in "Speed" mode.

Hardware-wise I see no reason for an issue whatsoever.

What screen resolution do you have for the Z? 1600x900 or 1366x768?

Your right, your hardware is more than enough to play Civ IV. Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers?

Also, shut down any unnecessary programs and services running in the background.
